Bruce Springsteen often finds himself just two steps ahead in his liberal values because he’s rarely “off” in his foresight regarding out values. Indeed his leadership has often enhanced our evolving values. Bruce started a mixed band – mixed race, mixed gender, and even mixed in some messed up folks – but never off. Now he is backing Kamala Harris and he believes nothing has ever been more important to the nation and we best follow along.

He was born to run, to be sure – but only on the promise that we would come along as many of us have done. Born in the U.S.A. is not some tribal war-like faux patriotic song but one sung by a real patriot with real American spirit demanding that Vietnam vets coming home from an actual war be treated as the patriots we should respect. These warriors were born in the U.S.A. A similar message regarding respect remains today except he is going for the big one. The Boss won’t be satisfied until all Americans are seen as deserving the same fundamental fairness and respect. They – and we – are Americans after all.

In the video on Instagram, Bruce sits in a diner wearing a red plaid blue collar jacket while earnestly and intensely saying that Harris has a “vision of this country that both respects and includes everyone without regard to race, gender, rich or poor, or sexual identity.” This country has never once lived up to the stated values of our foundation – “all men are created equal” but we seemed to be getting closer and the Boss wants to lead from two steps ahead. He is not off.

Springsteen believes that the rights above are now threatened – not expanding while seeing Harris as the solution. He gently states that Kamala has ” “the vision of America I have been consistently writing about for 55 years.” In anyone else it might sound self-absorbed. But Bruce has legitimacy such that it rings true. He has written lyrics about offshoring, AIDs, and he has pulled concerts out of states with anti-LGBTQ laws. There is much more. He matters because he gets to the places we need to be. Catch up.

In the video, Bruce says that the election upcoming is the most important since the Civil War. Yes, it is now almost normal for each side to argue as such – this is at least the third presidential election garnering comparisons to 1860. But this time the emotions have boiled to a point that each side stands pointing at the other as being a threat to democracy. Perhaps this actually is the election prior to a civil war – one wonders what the political atmosphere felt like in 1860. The tension this year might have led Springsteen to make such an emphatic endorsement. If anyone can reach people on both sides it would be a rockstar who is seen as a real American to everyone… but even that seems to be slipping away.

We won’t know until enough of us look to the Boss and follow his message. Time and time again, Bruce is a couple steps ahead of what’s right. We can only hope that he’s not breaking new ground now. Those Glory Days seem a long way off. Or maybe its the country as a whole which is just two steps from where it should be. Bruce is not off, it leaves us hoping to get there.
