Waddaya done for me lately, baby?   Hollywood axiom

Full Disclosure  Those of you who read me regularly, and thank you for that, will recognize the reason for GOP voter depression in November, mainly because I immediately wrote about it in the follow up of the SCOTUS hatchet job on Roe v Wade. But Susan Del Percio put it so much better.

It was on a weekend MSNBC show, I want to say it was Yasmin Vossoughian, and she was talking about how the SCOTUS decision had changed the dynamics of the 2022 midterms. Yasmin’s question to former GOP strategist and Lincoln Project co-founder Susan Del Percio went something like this;

Since the Supreme Court decision, the Democrats have grabbed the abortion issue with both hands and run with it. They’re running on it in their own races, hammering their opponents in the GOP with it, out fundraising the GOP, and Democratic voter registrations are through the roof, especially with women in key swing states. My question is, is it possible that the Democrats could overplay their hand, and GOP candidates could point to Democratic enthusiasm as a way to whip up their own base to come out and vote?

Not a bad question. But Del Percio smiled sweetly, shook her head, and said No, and here’s why. The GOP spent 50 years using Roe v Wade to motivate their single issue voters out to the polls, but that enthusiasm didn’t alarm Democrats, because they had abortion rights, and thought they always would. Now Roe is overturned, abortion bans are popping up all over the place. If you’re in the GOP, how do you motivate voters to come out and vote for something they already have?

Thank you Susan! I said exactly the same thing way back then, but not with quite the same clarity. As I said to Teri, If the Nevada state Democratic party came to me and said, “Look dude, vote for Sisolak and Cortez Masto, and if they win, we’ll give you a brand new Xbox 1, That should be tempting. Problem is, I already have a nice new shiny Xbox 1-X, which I play all the time. Where’s my motivation? How many X-Boxes do I need?

Only the problem is even worse for the GOP this year, because at least an XBOX 1 is sexy. But if you’re a GOP incumbent, you’re stuck telling your base, Look, we got Roe v Wade overturned for you. But if you don’t all show up en masse and vote GOP in November, and the Democrats hold the House, and add a couple of seats to the Senate, the first thing the Democrats will do is to codify Roe v Wade!

I’m sorry, did you say codify? What the hell is that?! The average voter has no idea of what codify means. And to the average Republican voter, it probably means fish-and chips, you know, cod-fry? GOP voters are the simple clay of the earth, they don’t want to have to think, they just want people and issues to hate! That’s how they roll.

Look at it this way. If the abortion issue didn’t fire up the Democrats for 50 bloody years, just because they had abortion and thought it would never go away, how does the GOP manage to motivate base voters to come out to the polls for an ephemeral concept like codifying a new law that takes it all away. The Democrats didn’t believe it, and neither will the GOP voters.

  1. A small number of “pro-life” voters sincerely believe that human life begins at conception, and must be protected. Most right-wingers jumped on board the anti-abortion movement because they want to stick it to the libs, especially liberal women. Their hostile rhetoric and punitive proposals give them away.
The GOP pinned all of its midterm hopes on the “Bidenflation”/high gas prices narrative. It’s too late for them to come up with a different winning strategy.

    • Stick to libs true but don’t forget, to conservatives, women are property. Roe, et.al., told those people “women are not property. Not yours, not anyone’s”. This is particularly true in the south where owning women was the last bastion for owning humans in the country. To an extent con men still believe they own their women thanks in large part to evangs and that ilk and the desire of ‘pubes to get elected at all costs including enslaving 1/2 of the population.

  2. I realize the potential dangers of cluttering up what is a simple and hugely advantageous issue for us. Still, SOME (and it’s impossible to know how many, especially men) GOP voters will understand and respond the way the GOP is hoping (PRAYING!) for in November. As a result, while it’s risky to add something else into the mix SCOTUS and the self-righteous modern Puritans including several on SCOTUS have made it clear they are coming after prescription birth control. Just as soon as the right case bubbles up to them and rest assured The Federalist Society has been flooding the courts with cases, some of which have gotten to the appellate level on ultra-conservative Circuits.

So I say we can’t just hammer Roe. Our candidates also have to remind them how hard conservatives have worked to deny payment for birth control in company health plans, how they have been giving cover to pharmacists refusing to fill prescriptions and that even that’s not enough. They want it banned! Make it clear that AS SOON AS THEY CAN the asshats on SCOTUS want to give states the ability to make birth control illegal. I keep saying guys, particularly in rural (usually bright red areas and states HATE having to use condoms. If women in relationships want something more reliable than condoms which even if properly and carefully used have a ten percent failure rate, guys and especially asshat MAGAs really hate having to rely on them!

I for one think a “They’ve taken away the right to choose abortion even in many cases where it risks women’s lives to continue a pregnancy, and they are hard at work taking away the pill and IUDs!

    • Gun control. The Gop judges are pushing no regulation on guns. Lynching laws. The slaver states all have ‘stand your ground’ laws which are nothing but state sponsered lynching (like the forced birthing laws are just slavery for women). It is time to call them fascist racist traitors and quit pussy footing around. Time to stomp our damn feet.

  3. I could be wrong, but I think the gun issue and mass shootings in stores, schools, houses of worship, has got to be big motivator, as well.

    • Ask the Parkland kids and the survivors of Uvalde how wrong you are. You’re onto something, Cherl…all the key wedge issues this reactionary crowd has relied on are turning against them.

    • Yes, to an extent. Never forget however that many, many people own firearms. I own some myself and I use them for hunting and target shooting. While I think protecting bodily autonomy, LGBQT rights, etc. are crucial, I am still going to have issues with pols saying ALL guns need to go away. Would I give my rifles up to save women from slavery? Probably. I shouldn’t have to make that choice. Any gun control has to be reasonable or you’re not only going to lose ‘pubes (lost cause anyway) but also blue dog dems and independents. I’d think twice before muddying the water with this issue.

We say the ‘pubes/cons should have been careful what they wished for but the same could be said about those of us on the other side of the political spectrum.

    • You’re right on Cherl. Every parent with a school-age kid and half a functioning brain will want gun control measures that actually protect their children. The best and simplest is to ban AR-15 type guns, the ones all the shooters prefer. The military-grade weapons. They were banned by the Dems before and school shootings dropped precipitously.

  4. I see where a lot of the ‘pubs have “softened” their attitudes about abortion (at least they’re trying to say so). I just hope none of their idiot supporters believe them, they would get back into office and do right what they started to do in the first place. They’re just trying to save their asses as usual.
