Lawd have mercy, Trump. This was pitiful. We know he *can* read, more or less; he just usually doesn’t. This was quite a fluff last night. It was oddly insulting to America. He was very strange at the “celebration” yesterday. Staring at himself staring at himself. Sleeping. On his phone during the waahooo fireworks (under impressive). Almost everyone out there is going to have breathing problems today, especially the toddlers! We can be sure he was in air-conditioned comfort. And Melania came out? How much did he have to pay her? And who was sitting on his other side? But okay, rambling, so let’s get back to his insult. With gratitude for Raw Story:
President Donald Trump drew scorn from conservatives and liberals alike for a July 4 stumble that threw his patriotism, and his education, into question. Trump addressed the nation on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence with stern, inaccurate words for his opponents. “And as our Declaration of Independence tells us,” Trump said, “we are all made in the image of one almighty god. And a communist will never say that“.
Wut? We can’t even say the normal “what” to that. A lot of us went and re-read the Declaration yesterday. There is nothing remotely similar to that in there. One almighty god. Communism. This is embarrassing. Almost anyone in the world can find that document online. The president of America can’t get the Declaration of Independence right in a written speech. Good grief.
The video clip on X was quickly modified to include readers’ added context. That message alerted viewers to the issue. “The Declaration of Independence does not say ‘we are all made in the image of one almighty god,'” the message reads. “It states that ‘all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.'”
Heh. Ms. Cynical here went to triple-check, just to be sure. The words are in the ”wrong” (not wrong) order, so thank you to the viewer who corrected it. It’s right at the beginning! You don’t have to read the whole text. Lawdy, if Trump had tried to read the whole thing, it would have been 2 in the morning before the fireworks started! He literally couldn’t read it straight because he never reads anything straight, and it would have taken forever. The Declaration would have been better than his babbling. Nope, did not listen, did some lip-reading.
Viewers were quick to express their frustration with the president. //// “Nothing says ‘I love America‘ like misquoting the Declaration of Independence on live TV and then pretending the fake quote proves everyone else hates the country,” influencer Khary Penebaker wrote on X. //// Alex Nowrasteh, a senior vice president for policy at the conservative think tank Cato Institute, resorted to sarcasm with a jab at national conservatives who support Trump. “Trump may have misquoted the Declaration, but that’s ok because the Declaration should have said that,” he wrote. “-NatCons, probably.” //// Matthew Boedy, a professor of rhetoric at the University of North Georgia, urged the president to better his education. “America in 2026: its president misquotes the Declaration of Independence,” Boedy wrote. “Open the civics centers. Just for him.”
Trump won’t think about being wrong because he “never” is. It’s up to the rest of the country (mostly) to be embarrassed. And we are. One almighty god. Communism. The country isn’t just going downhill. Its president is, to quote Mr. Walz, weird. Up front, flat out weird. We need a third muzzle for Trump. Make it gold and present it to him as an accessory. Then he’ll wear it, thinking he’s better than everyone else. That’s a great visual. We should keep that in mind.
See you soon!
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that, of all the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
