Rudy Giuliani has taken an investigation that is supposed to be above politics (and in reality surely is) and defends his guy in a manner more dangerous than farce.
Rudy Giuliani spoke at an event in Israel earlier today and described the Mueller investigation as one that “has a group of investigators that includes 13 highly partisan Democrats … (who) are trying very very hard to frame him to get him in trouble when he hasn’t done anything wrong,” according to The Associated Press. Rudy has set up a situation where now, Mueller can reveal devastating facts, and Trump’s most loyal base will likely believe they are crafted, fake, a frame job, criminal.
This is so far beyond the pale that I am having trouble describing the emotions pulsing through me. I can state that my ten-year-old daughter recognized the bizarre nature of the statement while watching the news as I mowed the lawn. She, on her own accord, and all of ten, came out to get me, in order to tell me that “something happened that you need to write about.” Now, I will grant that she is precocious – but not that precocious, she just recognized that an accusation that the investigation intends to “frame” Trump is something rather “off,” something she hasn’t heard before.
She’s right.
This is it. This is the line in the sand, the test our country will face, whether we’re still capable of self-government. Will enough citizens stand-up to the obvious bull shit thrown out by the White House and its sycophants on a daily basis to defend the integrity of a neutral investigation by a respected team? Or will the Republican half, the 42% or so that are capable of supporting Trump, rise up and defend him to the end, despite the evidence?
Quick review, just this week, we’ve heard that:
Trump has the power to pardon himself,
That the investigation is unconstitutional, and now
The investigation consists of 13 partisan democrats trying to frame Trump.
Only Trump could convert a life-long Republican like Mueller and make him “a partisan Democrat.” But, I am not sure why I am surprised. The only way Trump can “beat” this investigation is to make Mueller “the enemy.” Republicans perceive themselves as having only one “enemy,” and they’re not Russians, not North Koreans, not even ISIS (though he joins ISIS with Democrats), Democrats are the enemy. We Democrats love terrorists (according to Trump) and murderous immigrants, and everything else hated by conservatives, who are driven by hatred. Democrats are the enemy, and we’re to be thwarted without regard to the damage done.
That is the reason that Giuliani can say that Mueller is “framing” Trump, turning the investigation from one that had formerly been “unfair” or “unconstitutional” to now criminal.
What’s next?
Mueller must speak soon, and speak powerfully. Thank god that man is still doing his job.
