But surprisingly, it’s in a good way. It involves someone that some of us screamingly detest. It’s possibly something Trump is considering. But the explosion that will occur if he chooses yes is going to light up the sky. All Republicans said “hell NO”. This is startling. They don’t often work together, not the whole party. But they did. And now we’ll see if Trump does something or not. Let’s hope it’s a “not,” but there’s no way to tell what the hell Trump will do these days because he’s getting really erratic. With thanks to Raw Story:
Every Senate Republican went on record against a presidential pardon for convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, breaking with President Donald Trump, who has refused to rule one out. Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) forced the vote Wednesday through a procedural move called unanimous consent, which passes automatically when no senator objects. No Republican objected, according to Axios.
We should actually remember the unanimous consent. It’s how they got the Epstein Files Transparency Act law pushed through the Senate. And the guy who voted against it in the House will know for the rest of his life that America is against him because he voted no. Not a smart move, dude. But, back to our story. Everyone said hell no in the Senate, and that’s pretty amazing. Usually there are holdouts for some reason or another.
That meant Republicans agreed Maxwell “should not” receive “a pardon, commutation, or any other form of executive clemency” — the language of Rosen’s resolution. Trump has given Democrats plenty of material to work with. Last July, while visiting his Turnberry resort in Scotland, he told reporters he was open to the question. “Well, I’m allowed to give her a pardon, but nobody’s approached me with it, nobody’s asked me about it. It’s in the news about that—that aspect of it, but right now it would be inappropriate to talk about it,” Trump told reporters, as Axios reported. “I just wish her well, frankly,” the president said at an earlier White House briefing.
That last comment made the country explode. She’s convicted of sex trafficking, and he wishes her well. What does that say to you, to us? Nothing good. She has to have so much dirt on him to blow not only his presidency, but his life wide open. *That* would be something to see. That’s probably what she told Blanche in her meetings with him and no one else. That’s potentially why she was moved to a much cushier jail and her own private team of guards and so forth, which just pissed us off. She doesn’t deserve to be there. She deserved to be where she was!
Rosen’s resolution cited Trump’s repeated refusals to close the door, noting that “President Donald Trump has publicly stated that he possesses the authority to grant a pardon to Ghislaine Maxwell in this matter and has declined to categorically rule out exercising such authority.” “…the President should not grant a pardon, commutation, or any other form of executive clemency to Ghislaine Maxwell,” the resolution added. “According to public reporting, Mr. Blanche spent approximately nine hours meeting with Ghislaine Maxwell. He did not even spend nine minutes meeting with a survivor,” Bensky told senators. The resolution is symbolic and non-binding.
Unfortunately. Trump will do one of three things. He will ignore it. He will give her one just to spite the Senate. He will listen. Let’s hope it isn’t the middle one. That would blow him up, but he might not care, especially after looking at the very good odds that Democrats will at least flip the House.; But right now he has majorities in both. Just because Senators grew spines for this resolution does not mean they’ll keep them, which is a pity because they could push back about his craziness. Ah well. To dream / the impossible dream…..
See you soon!
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that, of all the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
