Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders came out swinging on her first day in office; tired of the government and teachers indoctrinating students, she made sure to sign an executive order that former Gov. Very Republican, but Non-MAGA, Asa Hutchinson overlooked. She banned critical race theory from being taught in Arkansan schools.

I must confess, I didn’t know that CRT was ever taught in Arkansan schools.

In my writing here, there, and everywhere, I have told Democrats never to engage MAGAs in “CRT” because if they cannot define it – and they can’t – then why bother? One simply plays into their game. CRT is a graduate school-level study of insidious laws (such as environmental) that have an otherwise unnoticed greater impact on POC. Like all grad school, sociological-legal issues, it can get taken to ridiculous levels (it’s what grad school is for). “CRT” was never meant to be taught in K-12. The only demand was that when we teach American history, we teach the history of all Americans and demonstrate that it’s not all exceptional. White people weren’t always “fair,” ask James Till. But not in Arkansas. Huckabee said, by way of the Washington Examiner:

The secretary of the Department of Education is required by the order to review the department, identifying any promotion of CRT. He then must “amend, annul, or alter those rules, regulations, policies, materials, or communications to remove the prohibited indoctrination.”

Further, “The Secretary shall ensure that no school employee or student shall be required to attend training or orientations based on prohibited indoctrination or CRT.”

Indoctrinate is the word that should draw giggles. We “indoctrinate” kids in math. We “indoctrinate” kids in science. And when we teach history and civics, we “indoctrinate” students in “society’s history.” The question is whether we want to indoctrinate them into history that makes conservative white Americans comfortable. George Washington could never tell a lie! Or do we talk about what happened?

Whenever I hear conservatives talk about teaching American exceptionalism instead of American treatment of Black Americans, I always like to say, “So America is only exceptional if a big part is left out?” They don’t respond positively to that question, and a simple retort of, “But I’m the one saying that teaching all American history is best, and you’re saying some must be left out to prove we’re exceptional.

I doubt Sarah can define CRT. I doubt she cares. It is a campaign issue, and you can bet your inherited job that Sarah Huck wants to be in the Oval Office someday. And she has no chance of making it passed Iowa if she isn’t front and center stopping those liberal programs that oppress white people so unfairly.

  1. I got indoctrinated in Christianity from the time I can remember. Nothing really weird. I grew up in a regular ole standard Presbyterian church although since I could sing found myself visiting just about every denomination before I was out of school. Anyway, PART of that indoctrination was in school and no, I didn’t attend the K-8 Catholic school in town that many (not all) Catholic kids did for a while. Nope. Regular old public schools and pretty damned good ones, at least back then. But we had school prayers. And in music sang religious songs sometimes. And of course there were school Christmas concerts EVERYONE in grade school (yes, we had some Jewish kids) sang in and later when chorus was optional there too of course.

My point is that Sarah HucksterBE Sanders would freak the fuck out I lived in her state and suggested I’d gone through religious indoctrination. “THAT DOESN’T COUNT!!!!!” would be her response, echoed by other “Christians” who would make my life miserable for speaking up.

    • I did Catholic schools from.K through college. Yes, there were required college theology classes, but they weren’t indoctrination. We delved into fairly complex doctrines and read eminent Protestant theologians as often as Catholic ones. In one class we studied the concept of a,Savior and wrote papers on books like the Autobiography of Malcolm X, The Last Temptation of Christ, and at least one by a conservative Christian (I don’t recall.it because I chose Malcolm X and it didn’t impress me, but It think it may have been by Schweitzer),albeit not a popular televangelist.
Even in grammar school.and junior high, we got accurate history, both American and world, where we learned about slavery, indentured servitude, religious wars. Junior high and above, we got anti immigration, the Know-Nothings, the muckrakers, the Trail of Tears, broken treaties with Native Americans, the horrors of war, the Holocaust, FDR and the Deprrssiony, more in-depth study of the American Revolution including the fact that the constitution wasn’t much better for citizens than the British most ligament sry system designed to.favor rich, white landowners, etc. I guess I wss indoctrinated in facts. Poor us.

  2. It’s not about CRT – that’s code. Gotta keep those blacks in their place. No one is gonna teach our little white kids about things white folks did. It’s not about CRT – that’s code. No slavery – those folks got meals and a place to live! Not gonna teach our kids what whites did against Native Americans, Japanese and more. We gotta build up those little white kids to make them realize – they are so much better than everyone else.

  3. All institutional religions dumb down the actual history just as our schools dumb down our national and state histories. When you don’t teach the truth with all of its mystery, you get a nation of morons. Christianity is a creation of the Roman empire. Faux democracy is a creation of our history that has never been true. Our culture has been shaped completely by the illusion of advertising. I watched several games over the weekend and watching the crowd stand and cheer for the national anthem made me cringe when I wondered how many of them have supported the fascist down in Florida. The rich have no intention of sharing anything or admitting the truth. That strategy has worked for 240 years. We are a self deluded culture. That’s how you get a serial lying hypocrite as governor.
