You will not believe this. Well, maybe you will, considering how we’ve seen the standards of politics go completely to hell the past ten years. Marco Rubio was once an honorable man, I have read. When I saw him sending out campaign contribution notices via email when Florida was being attacked by a hurricane, I personally lost all respect for the man. But that’s just me. Rubio has completely sold out to Donald Trump. And if he ever had any moral compass, it is but a dim memory. But that’s not the shocking part of what you’re about to see. The shocking part is that Rubio takes Trump’s utter diplomatic failure to move the needle in Ukraine even a hair, and he exculpates Trump. And then he actually lionizes him for picking up the damn phone in the first place.

The tweet ends “phone calls.” Yes, now the very number of phone calls made or the fact that they’re even being made is a laudable thing. Wow. Next Rubio will be praising Trump for coming to work at all. I can hear it now: “The president is a golf champion and he could have been out playing golf, but no, instead he showed up in the Oval Office and waited for reporters to shuffle into the room so that he could insult them.”

And then he’ll say: “The president inherited the Oval Office. He would much prefer to work from the third hole at Mar-a-Lago, but no, he has to work in the White House. He inherited this situation from John Adams. Just because John and Abigail wanted to live in this dump, does that mean Donald has to, too?”

Yes, we are so so very lucky that Trump bothers to pick up the telephone from time to time. Maybe we should all run out and buy his Bitcoin to show our appreciation.

I’m sure that so many of you worked in corporate America, as I did, most of my life. In that realm if a boss says to get something done, you get it done. You don’t come back without it done and say, “Well, I deserve tremendous credit for having made the phone calls.” Trump couldn’t hold an office job in the real world, but then we all knew that.

And this is the real problem right here: Trump would not be where he is without a complicit Republican party. They know who and what he is. And they don’t care. If he wrecks our economy, if he makes us the laughingstock of the world, if he causes the deaths of innocent people, they.don’t.care.

The GOP is happy to have a body in the Oval Office and to be in power. The larger moral dimension of all this is of no concern. In fact, I venture to say that most of them are hoping that Trump will be successful in a fascist takeover and elections will all stop, like musical chairs. I’m sure that the lot of them are only too happy to contemplate a scenario where they just sit in office the rest of their natural lives and don’t have to deal with pesky things like town halls and reelection.

It may sound cynical but I venture to say that there are conversations to this effect being had all the time and they’re all laughing. They’re laughing at how all it took was a TV game show host to topple democracy and put them all in the land of milk and honey.

Make no mistake, the GOP loves Trump, like the Nazis loved Hiter. At least until after the war and then they all disavowed ever following the man. If and when a post-Trump era presents itself and some moral accountability takes place, I expect the very same thing that happened at Nuremburg to happen here at home.

If I sound so uncertain it’s because after all this time and after what a stone cold moron Trump is, he still is in power and his minions still defend him, like all this is normal. I sometimes wonder if this will ever end. Rubio’s utter capitulation to Trump’s ineffectiveness as a leader does not give me hope.

  1. You’re cynical from bitter experience, Ursula, as we all are after watching the Trumpler shitshow all this time. You bet your sweet ass that the Repugs laugh at how they’ve taken over a once-proud democracy, brought it to its knees and are poised to administer the coup de grace. There’s not a single GOPer who possesses any integrity whatsoever now. And they’re what’s running our country. Anyone counting on the ’26 mid-terms to set things right better wake up. The fix was in in ’16 and ’24, and will be even better next year.

Too true. My absolute fear, nay, certainty: with thumbs on the scale, “friendly” words with electoral staff, nudges here, blockages there……

Probably squeak the House but the real need is the Senate and (Lord forgive me but to avoid any efforts at rejuvenation) pray for the (2) more elderly SC’s, their health and that they continue to love the job/status
