Republicans Just Did Putin a HUGE Favor And He Couldn’t Be Happier

Republicans have been jonesing for months to make the tragic situation in Ukraine worse than it already is and now it appears they may have the chance to do just that. We’re facing another possible government shutdown in January and that, coupled with their harsh demands for tighter border security may be all they need to make Russian President Vladimir Putin’s day.

Republicans pushed for a harsh border security and immigration bill in May but that wound up being suspended because they simply refused to budge unless all their demands were met.

That’s Republicans for you.

Now, of course, this is coming back into play as the Biden administration has asked for supplemental (meaning non-budgeted) assistance for Ukraine, Taiwan, and Israel, according to New York Magazine. Now that this bill, which would fund Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan is pending in the Senate but of course Republicans are up to their old tricks: Holding out to the point of threatening to defeat the bill or relying on an old favorite: staging a filibuster.

This is a dire situation for Ukraine and it led Shalanda Young, the director of the Office of Management and Budget to warn Congress that money is running out, The Hill reports.

“i want to be clear: without congressional action, by the end of the year, we will run out of resources to procure more weapons and equipment for ukraine and to provide equipment from u.s. military stocks. there is no magical pot of funding available to meet this moment. we are out of money — and nearly out of time,” Young wrote.

“we are out of money to support ukraine in this fight. this isn’t a next year problem,” Young continued. “the time to help a democratic ukraine fight against russian aggression is right now. it is time for congress to act.”

All this Republican stubbornness is likely a boon to Putin. After all, it gives him more time to come up with additional military strategies — and then to act on them. No wonder Trump likes Putin. After all, the former president loved to obfuscate situations and who knows what was going on behind the scenes while he did?

And Young’s words aren’t fear-mongering. Not in the least. Security experts outside the U.S. government warn that Ukraine will be in dire straits because there just isn’t the necessary military strength needed to hold Russian forces back. They also added that Putin will view this as Western support for his enemy as waning at a moment that couldn’t be worse.

This has led Army War College professor John Nagle to observe in an interview, “I Ukraine is going to lose this war, it’s going to lose it in the House of Representatives.”

In her letter, addressed to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer(D-NY.) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) painted a dire picture.

The government, she wrote, has already blown through the previously approved $111 billion that was previously allocated to Ukraine. This includes the Pentagon, which used up 97 percent of the $62.3 billion it received by mid-November, Young said. The State Department has used up an additional $4.7 billion of the military assistance it received. This included humanitarian assistance funds and economic and civilian security assistance.

All of this puts Republicans just where they want to be, and since they are remaining stubborn on the border issue, accompanied by potential demands by the House that Ukraine funding be significantly reduced or augmented by (such as the IRS spending cuts the House had earlier linked to a bill to aid Israel, which Democrats weren’t willing to accept.

So all this infighting has undoubtedly benefited Putin as Republicans continue to make sure nobody gets anywhere unless GOP demands are met.
