Aaaah, springtime in Washington. The crocuses are in bloom, the cherry blossoms line the Potomac and the House is in session. James Comer and Jamie Raskin are going at each other openly, which is refreshing. Comer contends that the Democrats are mentally ill. Raskin counters that the only “deranged” politician in the conversation is Donald Trump and suggests that Mr. Comer and his party “disentangle” themselves from that relationship. Hell of an idea. Unfortunately, that would take a pair of balls, at least one set, and between everybody in the House the Republicans can’t assemble such a commodity. Nor the Senate, nor the entire GOP.

Comer and Raskin are the archetypal Democrat and Republican in the year 2024. Raskin is smart, witty, articulate, and commands the respect of his party for his courage and strength in not only the execution of his duties as a congressman but the fortitude in which he has handled personal tragedy in this life; his cancer diagnosis and the suicide of his son. Jamie Raskin is considered a prince of a man and is beloved by his party.

Then we get to the Republican archetype, the mean, nasty, petty James Comer, a veritable warthog of a man. He’s not very bright and he makes up for his lack of basic intelligence with belligerence, apparently thinking that those two commodities are one and the same.

Comer does investigations backwards, meaning that he first decides the outcome he seeks and then attempts to reverse engineer the facts to result in that outcome. That’s all his impeachment nonsense vis a vis Joe Biden has ever been, is figuring out how to cobble together a fact free conspiracy theory that might fly.

He does this for two reasons: personal aggrandizement and to provide a smoke screen to Donald Trump’s continual misbehavior. At the very least he’s hoping for a both sider draw, at the most he’s hoping for a kind of wild shoot out on Main Street. If he just fires in enough directions at once, he’s bound to hit something, right?

The Senate is said to be the World’s Greatest Deliberative Body and the House to be a mini version of the Senate. But if this is great deliberation, on a world class, we are in a world of hurt as a species.

Just one more example of what happens when one of the two major political parties collapses.

Bravo, Mr. Raskin. Somehow you manage to endure this creep. I know I could not.

  1. I could hardly stand to watch that. Kudos to Jamie Raskin. He is indeed a prince of a man. Hard to believe the two are the same species.

  2. I’ll tell you why Comer keeps getting elected: Lazy Democratic voters.

According to the Wiki page for KY-1 (Comer’s district), party affiliation, as of October of 2023, breaks down to

    Republican 47.3% (270,854)
    Democratic 43.9% (251,444)
    Other/Independent 8.8% (50,209)

And, yet, Comer–in 2022–won with 184,157 votes compared to his Democratic opponent’s 61,701 votes.
In 2020, Comer won 246,329 votes compared to his Democratic opponent’s 82,141 votes.

Obviously, you can’t really say that all the affiliations of October of 2023 matched the affiliations from 2022, much less 2020, but I really find it hard to believe that so many people suddenly decided to affiliate as Democrats between November 2022 and October 2023. Going by 2022’s results, fewer than 1 in 4 Democrats bothered to vote for their own party’s nominee and in 2020, fewer than 1 in 3 Democrats bothered to vote for their own party’s nominee.
It truly amazes me that Comer’s district has a CPVI of R+24 when the district’s party affiliation shows just 3 percentage points difference in registrations. Compare to the 5th Congressional district with a CPVI of R+32 and a 17 percentage point difference in party registrations. Even worse, compare the 6th Congressional district with a CPVI of “just” R+9 and a NEGATIVE 3 percentage point difference (for some reason, KY-06 actually has more registered Democrats than GOPers and yet, in 2022, their GOP *incumbent* representative was re-elected by a TWENTY-NINE percentage point margin!).
