Putin Palooza Isn’t Playing So Well In GOPland

Come on you GOP wimps, is that all you got?! Come on Laborious MTG, Sugar Daddy Matt Gaetz, Madison Commie Cawthorne, and Paul Seig Heil! Gosar! Sing those songs, and sing ’em loud and proud! They’re music to my ears!

Because it’s bombing in the GOP heartland, and these cranial defectives may well be helping to sway the 2022 midterms in the Democrats direction. Because their undying love and devotion for Vlad the Imp is falling on deaf ears in much of the rest of the country, even traditional red districts and states.

So, here’s the difference between a politician and a rock star. A politician constantly has a finger to the wind, and he or she knows when to back off of an unpopular position and pander to constituents. Rock stars are under no such constraints, after all, they’re rock stars! Besides, they’re not playing to their constituents. They’re playing to the FUX News bubblesphere! That’s where all the facetime and big donor bucks are. And that’s why they’re rock stars!

Which is apparently killing the GOP in the heartland. MSNBC reported today that groups of GOP House incumbents in several GOP midwest states sent President Biden a letter, demanding that he do more to help Ukraine. Now those are some real politicians! They listened to their constituents, and their constituents want Putin to get a big, fat, good old bloody nose. And they’re taking action to prove to their constituents that they listened, an they’re responding.

In the last 10 days, I have heard at least 5 GOP incumbents, talking from the Hill, lauding the Biden administration for the way they have dealt with the Ukraine crisis, and the steps they’re taking to ensure that Ukraine can defend itself. At least two of them said that they were proud of how their President was handling the crisis. These are card carrying GOPasaurs. Now you know why I wrote that the Democrats should slam home everything they can get to take advantage of this sudden bonhomie.

But see, here’s the GOP’s problem. While I just reported that stuff to you, I’ll bet that not a single one of you actually saw 10% of it. That’s because you’re not homebound shut ins who spend all day glued to MSNBC and CNN. But I can pretty well guarantee that you’ve seen voluminous coverage of the Putin Marxists on your local news coverage. They’re news. Sane Republicans taking sane stances are a dime a dozen, or at least they used to be.

This is why McConnell and the moderate Senate Republicans are taking to every microphone they can find to denounce and marginalize the House Trump Trotskyites. Because this kind of shit is not playing well in the God fearing GOP heartland. Right now, Ukraine is the geopolitical Rocky of the western world. But they’re being drowned out.

This is what could flip the 2022 midterms on its ear, especially the Senate. They don’t have the protection of gerrymandering, they have to face all of the voters in the state. And if a lot of the people in a state are uber pissed at their local representative for his or her pro Putin stance, then they are unlikely to go back up the ballot and support a GOP candidate for Senate. Most people are too damn lazy.

And it doubles down the problems for the House. Because GOP incumbents in vulnerable House districts aren’t there because they’re flaming Trombies. But they’re highly likely to be facing Trombie inspired challenges from the right. How do they survive that minefield? How do they get out of a low turnout, Trump base primary in a position where then can then swing back to the middle to impress all of those white suburban soccer moms?

This is what happens when they eat their young. On the one hand, you want to cheer for traditional conservative candidates to kick Trump ass and minimize his hold over the party, but on the other hand, you want to root for the Trombies so they can get butchered in the general election.
