Oh, you’ve got to love you these Friday news dumps! It’s not even noon in the Pacific time zone and Trump world has just been struck with twin howitzers. It’s just like watching Batman, KAPOW! BLAM! ZAP! The Cantaloupe Crusader is not happy this Friday, I’ll tell you what.

The Department of Justice issued an opinion, here’s a link, saying that, “The Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has invoked sufficient reasons for requesting the former President’s tax information. Under section 6103(f )(1), Treasury must furnish the information to the Committee.”

The noose is tightening. The Supreme Court ordered this last year. The wheels of the law grind exceedingly slow, but they grind surely.

If you’re a coffee pot or a teevee at the Trump Bedminster Club, your time is probably up. There’s going to be a lot of smashed glass before this day is over.

We hope you sold the helicopter, Donald. We understand you need to put some cash together for legal advice and stat.

  1. The law about this says “SHALL furnish” – not “MAY furnish”. IRS lawyers would know that they don’t really have any options. The former guy will try to block this again, but with the DOJ’s opinion out and public, he’s SOL.

    • His options have drying up like a gasoline puddle in the middle of August all year. I do believe the last of that liquid is about to evaporate.

    • That’s the part I’ve never understood. The language in the statute is clear as a fucking bell. Richie Neal’s refusal to push and push HARD from day one infuriated me. A person doesn’t have to be a lawyer, or even particularly smart to read and understand such clear, unambiguous language. As you say the world SHALL seals the deal.

If Trump, or Mnuchin (I still want to see his ass investigated!) didn’t like the law then by golly they should have done what they smirkingly challenged us to do so many times. Pass new legislation for the President to sign, and Trump would certainly have signed something designed specifically to protect his fat ass!

I guess the problem was coming up with a change that could get passed. A law saying “Trump doesn’t want to turn over his taxes like the law says because people will be mean to him. And even charge him a ton of money in tax penalties or even prosecute him at the state or federal level (or both) for countless violations of tax law, some of which are criminal instead of civil. Trump believes he, and he alone deserves special treatment. That it’s not fair that HE have to follow the law. Hey, he might not have had his fingers crossed when he swore on one of those bible thingies to see that the laws were faithfully executed but he had his toes crossed! So neener neener didn’t mean a thinger on YOU! The current law should be amended to say that once Donald Trump files a tax return it gets locked up in a big ten inch thick armor box that’s sealed on all sides – only a door like a mailbox that allows something to go in but blocks anyone from reaching in to take something out too. So what if all the papers inside the envelope are blank sheets? The cover note taped to the outside stating what he says he owes is all that’s needed. Why would he lie? From now on it will be the law that Trump’s taxes are so secret only he knows what they are and anyone who asks for them goes to jail for not less than ten years or everything they own being turned over to his PAC or both.”

Kinda hard to see how that wouldn’t have passed through Congress in a jiffy!

      • Grassley’s whining about it. He should be capable of reading the controlling law. Or of getting a staffer to read it, if he’s incapable.

  2. Enola Gay has just released her cargo. We all know what happens next, right? But from the moment Trump lost, it was NEVER going to be any other way.

  3. He will continue to dwell in never never land. As the Eagles said, ” some people never come clean”. Until zip ties are behind his back, there is no credible argument that justice has been served. We can dream.

      • Equal treatment under the law is justice, not revenge. Revenge would be a cigarette & a blindfold. Who’s confused?

        • You are, Scott. Because you’ve already decided what the outcome SHOULD BE and will howl to the skies in the likely event that it falls short of that.

Hiding behind worthy ideals like “equal treatment under the law” makes us no better than MAGA maggots. We should at least have the decency to say that we want such things done because he hurt us and far too many things we care about. Then once we’ve said that, we figure out what is actually possible and will get us closer to where we want to be. That’s the only way justice, such as it has been practiced, has ever worked.

  4. I still hope to see the day that Traitor Tot is wearing an orange jumpsuit, and is walked to and locked into his cell in a super-max prison! And his criminal traitor cronies as well!!

    • The latter are pretty much a mortal lock, barring a few exceptions in the form of cooperative witnesses. The former, it’s a race between the Walls and the Grave at this point.
