This is where the second election of Donald Trump has landed us in the world. Our oldest and dearest allies, the Canadians, don’t trust us as far as they can throw us. And who can blame them? As you’ll hear Canadian Rep. Charlie Angus say, “You have a United States president setting up concentration camps.” Yes, we do. Alligator Alcatraz is more correctedly named Alligator Auschwitz. The Canadian border is extremely simple to cross, or used to be. You used to be able to stroll through the woods and do it. It might have been an international border but it was like crossing a state line in the United States. That may no longer be the case and again, who can blame the Canadians? Robin Williams once quipped that Canada was “the nice apartment over the meth lab” and hey, if I was living over a meth lab, and my neighbor was a lunatic, I would be considering my options, too.

Talk about a major global realignment. I don’t blame Canada for allying itself with Ukraine. And I wouldn’t blame Ukraine from allying herself with anybody who didn’t necessarily have the best interests of the United States in mind. Not after how Volodymyr Zelensky has been treated by this country. Both Trump and Vance treated Zelensky, a head of state of a nation at war, like you or I would not treat a restaurant server. And it didn’t stop there. Marge Greene’s puffy faced boyfriend, the quasi-journalist, insulted President Zelensky to his face in the Oval Office as well. That was a total low in American diplomacy but I don’t expect it to be the bottom. Not with Trump in charge. There is always a lower bottom.

And I’m sure you’ve heard the new definition of a shit sandwich (or a stupid sandwich): Canada and Mexico, with Trump in office. We managed to alienate our good neighbors to the south during Trump’s first term, now Canada follows during Trump’s second. We could always count on Mexico to come to our aid if there was a flood or earthquake in California, Texas, Arizona, that general locality. Mexico became a lot less eager to respond during Trump 1.0.

Right now, as I write, I can find no evidence that Mexico has chosen to assist Texas with its current crisis. And again, why should they? We have done nothing but insult and bully POCs and Mexican-Americans since Trump has been back in office. And Mexico sees what the rest of the world does, that Trump cutting the staff of the National Weather Service and cutting research into atmospheric phenomena has led to the crisis in Texas.

Trump is out playing golf today. He sent Kristi Noem down to Texas to do PR and her version of PR is to blame it all on Joe Biden and “ancient equipment.”

Half of America is not stupid. And the rest of the world is not stupid. People see Trump for who and what he is. And nobody can blame our good neighbors to the north or south for protecting themselves against this lunatic government that we have in place right now.

Trump has undone hundreds of years of goodwill. Hopefully future administrations can earn trust again. But trust, unfortunately, is like a crystal vase. Once it’s broken, it simply doesn’t glue back into the same thing again. Something is irreparably lost and it’s never the same. Best not to break trust in the first place.

  1. You can’t just stick the precious vase back together.

You have to make a whole new one.

Which might take as long as it took for the first one to achieve the same value.

  2. Sadly, it’s US, the American voting adults, they don’t trust…after the shitshow of the past decade, don’t blame them. Smart. Elbows up!

  3. It will take years and as a Canadian I hope the wounds do heal, because there are close ties between the two countries that trump can’t break. Many Canadians have family in the US.

Carney has said that his government is working on a strategic alliance with the EU and the UK that would see future arms purchases coming from Europe. That could include the purchase of the Gripen fighter from Sweden as a replacement for the F-35, which will hurt Lockheed Martin and the US economy in general. The holdup in announcing the deal may not be just in Canada but with NATO, which has based much of its planning around the F-35. trump has thrown a huge monkey wrench into the gears of the alliance, much to Putin’s delight.

trump simply doesn’t understand that his erratic behavior casts the US in the light of an unreliable partner, both in business and defense. It takes time and effort to plan and execute investments and military purchases. No country will be willing to invest resources with an unpredictable and potentially hostile partner.

Canada reconsiders the purchase of the F-35 fighter and could opt for the Swedish Gripen

  4. Trumpler and his rabid MAGAts don’t give half a rat’s ass what the rest of the world thinks. They believe the mighty USA is inviolable and can do whatever it wants, anytime, to anyone it wants. That, in essence, is what all narcissists think. Now, thanks to a spineless Congress, unlimited dark money and a corrupt supreme court, the presidential narcissist is making his fevered egocentric dreams come true.

  5. What is your headline talking about? It says, “Canada to buy arms from Ukraine.”

My first reaction was, “Ukraine doesn’t have arms to sell to Canada. Ukraine needs all its arms to fight Russia.”

Then I read the opinion piece. Not a word about Canada’s buying arms from Ukraine. You reproduce an X post from Canadian Rep. Charlie Angus in which he says, “We are now procuring from the Europeans—whereas before, we would have just gone to the United States as usual to buy gear.”

Sorry, but “procuring from the Europeans” does not imply that the gear comes from Ukraine. Whoever writes your headlines should ensure that they are backed up by the story.
