Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick gave his life in service to his country. But the enemy that fateful day were not foreign. These were domestic terrorists, whipped into a frenzy of violence and hate by a narcissistic psychopath who couldn’t accept that he’d lost re-election.

Officer Brian D. Sicknick was fatally hurt in a desperate attempt by Capitol Police to keep MAGA insurgents at bay. He later returned to his division office where he collapsed and was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was immediately placed on life support but tragically died of his injuries the following day.

To honour his 15 years of service dedicated to keeping Members of Congress and their staff safe, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced today that late Capitol Police Officer will lie in honor in the United States Capitol Rotunda. Together they released this joint statement:

“The U.S. Congress is united in grief, gratitude and solemn appreciation for the service and sacrifice of Officer Brian Sicknick,” said Pelosi and Schumer in a statement. The heroism of Officer Sicknick and the Capitol Police force during the violent insurrection against our Capitol helped save lives, defend the temple of our democracy and ensure that the Congress was not diverted from our duty to the Constitution.  His sacrifice reminds us every day of our obligation to our country and to the people we serve.

On behalf of the House of Representatives and the Senate, it is our great privilege to pay tribute to Officer Sicknick with this lying-in-honor ceremony. May this ceremony and the knowledge that so many mourn with and pray for them be a comfort to Officer Sicknick’s family during this sad time.”

The 2-day lying-in-honor will begin Tuesday, February 2 with a ceremonial arrival at 9:30am on the East Front of the US Capitol. The first viewing period, exclusively for members of the US Capitol Police, will commence at 10pm and continue overnight.

Members of Congress will be invited to a viewing period between 7am and 9am the next day, February 3. The Congressional Tribute will follow at 10:30am.  The ceremony will be open to invited guests only in keeping with CV-19 restrictions.

The funeral procession will begin with a ceremonial departure from the US Capitol at midday, February 3, and carry Officer Brian Sicknick to his final resting place at Arlington National Cemetery.

It’s a fitting commemoration for Officer Sicknick’s service and ultimate sacrifice. Rest in Peace.

    • Since Michelle’s story does include the word “invited” with regards to members of Congress and “invited guests” with regards to the ceremony itself, I’m guessing Nancy and Chuck have a list of names headed “People NOT Invited”–a relatively lengthy list of at least 140.

  1. There should be some journalists and camera crews outside the entrance to the Rotunda. ANYONE who voted to challenge the election results should be asked (with a Capitol Police Officer who was injured in the attack blocking them until they give an answer) why they lied about the election results. And why they voted to try and overturn the election results. They should ask if they intend to apologize to Officer Sicknick’s widow and family for their lies, and their votes to stop the Electoral Vote Certification and if not, then why not? And a final question if they don’t apologize on camera before going in to apologize to Officer Sicknick’s family they should be asked “Have you no shame at all? At long last have you NO sense of decency?” Are you so cold and unfeeling that you will try to score cheap political points by only PRETENDIING to honor this man who lost his life defending you and your colleagues?”

If only Helen Thomas was still with us! Perhaps someone will drag out clips of her blunt calling out of these kinds of people and a few will be inspired to channel her.

  2. Sadly, I doubt that this honor will have sufficient impact on the right wing of congress to even shame them into doing their duty in the impeachment trial. We have finally come to this.
