The lights are on, but no one’s home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Donald Trump hasn’t worked in months — well he never “worked” at all as you and I understand that term — he was too busy campaigning pre-November and since then he’s been too busy sulking and fomenting insurrection. Mitch McConnell more or less formally abdicated responsibility when he was asked in December about Trump’s coup attempt and he said, “The future will take care of itself.” Thanks Mitch. Now we know the truth. You’re not taking care of the future, it can go it on its own, que sera sera.

Now if you doubt for a moment that this is indeed the case, Exhibit “A” to the proposition that nobody’s minding the store is the debacle on January 6 when the chief of the Capitol Police was begging the Pentagon for troops and they ignored him. One officer he spoke to spoke of “optics.” Simply, that officer was worrying about his own optics and didn’t want to be the one to take responsibility and what that situation illuminated was a glaring lack of chain of command. We live in a world where the sitting *president* is doing just that, sitting, and nobody is in charge. Apparently Mike Pence was able to call out the National Guard when things got crazy. So right now, and quite possibly for some time, Pence is the de facto president of this country. Try not to let that give you nightmares.

And try not to let this give you nightmares, either. At a time when domestic terrorism is at an all time high, and the Republican party is on recess and permanently out to lunch because they won’t want to alienate a third of their constituents, whom they’re terrified of, we have an Acting-Acting Secretary of Defense in charge (Esper was Acting and Shanahan before him was Acting. The last real guy was Mattis and he resigned February, 2019) and he talks about communicating via mind meld like Mr. Spock, and says, “I cannot wait to leave this job, believe me.” That’s who’s in charge, folks. The party of personal responsibility has abdicated all responsibility, most of all the key one, to keep us safe. The Triad:

There are many Republicans in Congress who pride themselves on the seriousness with which they take our military operations and our security. They are all M.I.A. at the moment. Tweeting Bible quotes. Offering panglossian pablum assuring that all is well.

I’m not sure how we are supposed to take seriously future national security warnings from people who are washing their hair during one of the most dangerous periods in modern American history. […]

What could possibly be the Republican motive for completely abdicating the basic responsibilities to protect the country during the transition between administrations at this moment of crisis?

Here is the calendar for confirmations of Trump administration cabinet officials in 2017. As of this moment four years ago John Kelly, Jeff Sessions, Jim Mattis, Betsy DeVos, Ben Carson, Ryan Zinke, Rex Tillerson, and Elaine Chao had already had their confirmation hearings.

This year the Republican Senate has yet to hold a single confirmation hearing.

At a time when we have domestic terrorists threatening future attacks and an Acting-Acting (not a typo) DHS Secretary. […]

Here is a concerning fact: When Joe Biden is sworn in at noon this Wednesday, America will not have a permanent, Senate-confirmed secretary of Defense, or a secretary of State, or a DHS secretary, or a secretary of Health and Human Services. As things stand right now, the entire executive branch below the office of the president is set to be quasi-leaderless because the Republican party refused to move forward with confirmations in the normal manner. The only way out of this mess is for a “unanimous consent” resolution in the Senate on Inauguration Day. Fingers crossed.

Why are we in this position? Because before January 6 they were terrified of hurting Donald Trump’s feelings by taking any actions which suggested that Joe Biden was going to be the next president. And now they are keeping out of session so that they don’t have to confront the article of impeachment that the House has passed.

In other words: Because they were desperate to protect Trump, both then and now.

That is the plain and simple truth. The party in power now, at least until Wednesday, is more worried about protecting Donald Trump than protecting America.

First the GOP had its wingnut fringe elements, then they coalesced in 2016 to support Trump and the rest of the GOP happily jumped on the bandwagon. They didn’t care if Satan was on the ticket, so long as they had a shot at winning. Then Trump and his enablers ginned up the base to overthrow the government and the GOPers went along with him. This is not too strong language to use. If you were in another country, what would you call it when a losing political party kept giving lip service to the allegations of their crazed candidate about a stolen election, when they all knew that it was nonsense, but they wanted to appease the crazies in their party, because they were scared not to do so? The last days of Trump will go down in the history books as a time when raw political ambition triumphed over basic considerations like protecting life and the constitution, the latter of which Republicans swore under oath to do. Self interest and political cowardice rule the day in the GOP right now.

Never lose sight of the fact that Trump demanded that Pence somehow overturn the election results and get new electors in place and Pence hired a bunch of lawyers and scholars to review the fringe legal theory and see if it was possible. If Pence had found a loophole, he’d a gone for it in a New York minute. Never forget that.

And never forget Rudy Giuliani with his Game of Thrones reference, “trial by combat” minutes before Trump took the podium and told a armed and dangerous crowd of thugs to march on the Capitol and they did — chanting “Fuck Mike Pence.”

Right now the GOPers are hiding out, biding their time. And if we’re lucky, we’ll make it until Wednesday. And if we’re not — I remember a satire where an H-bomb went off in the distance and Bugs Bunny was in the foreground saying “That’s all, folks.” I don’t think it will come to that, but the fact is, nobody is on board to see that it doesn’t.

    • Where 60-70 cents out of every tax dollar goes. Our military is the largest, best armed, socialist entity in the world. Created by government, producing nothing but a threat, maintained by government.

  1. I have no love or respect or ANYTHING positive for Trump or Pence, but at last Pence isn’t clinically insane! Better him for 4 more days than Trump. Better an organ grinder, or his MONKEY!! for 4 more days, then Trump!

  2. That same terrifying possibility has been bouncing around in my battle wearied mind. Enough so that I have to ward off the denial as coping mechanism. The only thing that may be saving our skins is that the world is distracted by covid.

  3. Believsble to ilinformed individuals. Pence should have sent the certifications of the swing states back to each of the states that were disputed. How convenient to have a breaking of the capitol at this time of disputing. Trumps main crowd was just walking over. Look at tap evidence for truth of how it all transpired.president calls out NG. Trump will still be in control. This is a farce election.

    • You poor delusional Magat. Can’t spout your BS on Twitter or fartbook so now you’re here? Get out the brain bleach, use it and go away and get an education,

          • Pence’s job was ceremonial; he had no power to send anything anywhere. The certifications were the result of a careful, regulated, bipartisan process, impervious to fraud & manipulation. U.S. elections are the farthest thing from a “farce.” I’ve worked inside a board of elections in a presidential cycle and know very well there is no way to manipulate the voting and counting process.

        • Given their poor use of English, they’ve all sounded like Russian trolls or bots. Since I’ve thought that Vlad had a hand in the Jan. 6 uprising and that he has plants in all the RWNJ groups keeping them revved up, it wouldn’t surprise me that we’re attracting such vermin here at our little site. They are desperate to keep us all agitated. Eff them.

    • Must be very cold in moscow this time of year. ” ilinformed’? Please spend some time looking for an English dictionary. Ur trolling will improve.

    • Pence called out the National Guard, not Trump. But I’m sure I’m wasting my breath. Sigh. Have you tried checking out Breitbart or RedState? I think they’re more your speed than here.

    • Just where exactly would Pence have gotten the authority to do what you say? Because it wouldn’t have been from the Constitution. The Constitution sets forth that the states will determine the manner in which their electors are chosen, have those electors meet and cast votes for President and Vice President and send those votes and the certification of them to the Senate: Article II, Section 1, Clause II: “Clause II and Clause III spell it out so simple even someone like you that can’t spell should be able to understand. When it comes to a Vice President’s role, acting in their Constitutionally prescribed Office as President of the Senate Clause III makes it REALLY simple: ” The President of the Senate shall, in the presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the Certificates, and the Votes shall then be counted.” So again I ask exactly where would Pence have gotten the authority to do what you say he should have done? I GOT IT! I know who you are claiming has the authority! You are talking about His Excellency the Supreme Ruler of the Universe and Jeebeus’ & God’s puppet master Donald Trump! Right? Trump is the ruler of ALL of creation! If it wasn’t so dangerous for our country that people like you are this stupid, that you truly believe what you are saying about this stuff I’d laugh my butt off about it. But you refuse facts and reality. You are not grounded, and instead are suspended in mid-air like the coyote that’s run off the edge of the cliff before gravity takes over. Just try to remember, it’s not the fall that kills you are even the sudden stop at the bottom. It’s the realization that you are indeed that fucking stupid!

    • Go read “Government for Dummies”. You’ll get a more accurate picture of How Things Work than you’re getting from whatever your news source is.

  4. I’m glad you brought up the issue of Cabinet Appointments. The refusal of the GOP to even process any by holding hearings, much less confirm anyone is appalling. Trump was insanely slow in making appointments even to key positions and in some cases never did but he was even slow with Cabinet level picks. At least four years ago we had a SecDef, SecState and AG that had had confirmation hearings and were ready to go. Remember Obama? He had a number of people actually confirmed prior to being sworn in! I’m sure many are thinking that Biden can simply name the people he’s picked in an Acting capacity. However, unless I’m mistaken (and I REALLY hope I am this time) he can’t. As I understand it to have full authority people named that way have to have been confirmed by the Senate already for some other job. Unless he wants to use Trump administration people (fat chance!) President Biden won’t have anyone he’d want approved by the Senate for anything at all, anywhere in the government. You mentioned some kind of unanimous consent, and this is where I think we are well and truly screwed.

I don’t think it’s a secret that I’ve never thought much of Chuck Schumer. In this moment, with so much at stake we need someone with not only a spine of steel but the rhetorical skills to make a slam-dunk speech castigating McConnell and the GOP for this situation, the kind of speech where all the media outlets will give “Wow! You have GOT to see this!” type coverage and browbeat Republicans into submission. If, as I suspect at least one GOP Senator (looking at you CRUZ! And Hawley too, as well as Cotton any any others planning on a 2024 run) then Schumer should be ready and have his committee chairs have the shortest set of confirmations in history. Call in the nominees to the appropriate Committees, Committee Chair and Ranking member make their speeches, the nominee read their statement, ten minutes of questioning by the Chair and Ranking member AND GO STRAIGHT TO THE VOTE!

By the end of the day have the full Senate Vote, with the rules committee already having limited debate. And again, before starting Schumer should excoriate the GOP in the strongest terms and shoot down every objection we all know they will make to the “unprecedented and rush process” by pointing out that what’s unprecedented is that NOT ONE SINGLE nomination got ANY consideration prior to the inauguration, because the GOP was too busy coddling Donald Trumps snowflakey hurt feelings! And he should put it just like that. If someone else can put it better than me that would be great. Alas, I simply don’t have one ounce of confidence Schumer has that in him. We need a Majority LEADER and Schumer ain’t it. He never has been. And I for one don’t think he will be now, or at any point in the future.

    • Biden planned for this. He’s smarter than the GOP. He’s staffed the empty agencies that Trump gutted with lower and middle-level people who are experts in their areas so the departments will be able to start functioning even without a head.

And Schumer’s job isn’t to give dazzling speeches, it’s to outhink and outmaneuver the GOP and so far he’s been masterful at it.

  5. The attack USA scenario, okay – Forget that for a second, look outward.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; If Russia wanted to march into Belorussia and/or Ukraine – and/or, if North Korea was to “Unite” with South Korea, and/or Iran was to test some missiles out on some target, and/or if China was to “re-take” Taiwan, now would be the perfect time to do so. North Korea speaks with China on a regular basis, Putin is known to keep a close eye on both, and I’m sure Iran would go ballistic if Russia, China and North Korea were to start first with their agendas.
    Call in Donnie’s dominos theory.
Just something to chew on while the US is focused on the US.

  6. 14,000 BLM protesters arrested, often illegally. They didn’t threaten anyone but the racism in America. 100 insurrectionists arrested, breaking into the capital calling for executions of public servants. 5 dead. Police arrested BLM members for standing in a public street. I watched a video of officers assisting these traitors, even as they rummaged through the desks of legislators, taking pictures of the contents. I repeat for the thousandth time: U CANNOT REASON WITH FASCISTS. If you think so, u are as stupid as they are.

    • What is it with you assholes? Why don’t you get it, after 60, count them, 60 court rulings, HE LOST!!! TRUMP LOST!!! Write it on the mirror in soap, for crying out loud. Maybe you’ll get it. BTW, don’t come back here, you’re banned.
