Political ads are an artform. I well remember “Daisy” which was a black and white ad about the dangers of nuclear war. That was from the sixties. Then Dean Phillips, of all people, came up with one of the best political ads I’ve ever seen in my life. This was Bigfoot, looking for Phillips’ political adversary. A clip of that is below, because it is such a classic of the artform. And this clip that Eric Swalwell apparently paid for, is yet another mini epic destined for recognition.

This concept has been articulated before but never quite so succinctly. You wouldn’t trust Trump to drive a school bus. Or to teach kindergarten. Or to work as a file clerk in your office. Or to be a host at your restaurant. We can sit here and list job after job that you know this man could not do with his obnoxious drunk-at-the-end-of-the-bar persona and his general lack of ability to do anything other than pretend to be something he’s not in front of a camera.

And he doesn’t even do that very well. If he did, he would be acting alongside somebody like Anthony Hopkins, who portrayed his favorite character (evidently) Hannibal Lecter. Trump has no acting ability, sadly for us. If only he had the ability of his MAGA cronies like James Woods or Jon Voight, he might have spent his life acting and not gotten into reality TV or politics. But, alas, ’twas not to be.

In short, Trump can’t do anything but cheat at golf and pretend to be something he’s not. Those are his salient achievements in 78 years of life on this planet. And unfortunately we need a lot lot more in a president.

Here for an encore performance is the Bigfoot political ad I mentioned. And Daisy, which is such a classic that it made it into the Library of Congress, is below it. Enjoy.

Very effective ad. Barry Goldwater was considered by many to be a warmonger. The mid-sixties were not the time for such a mindset with the threat of nuclear annihilation. We can go back and parse through the particulars of that election but this ad had a definite impact.

I hope and pray that the schoolbus ad with Trump can get the same kind of traction.

  1. magats would consider the death of their children at von shitzinpants’ hands a singular honor. Yes, they’re they’re that f*cking stupid.

    • You’re right. I watched Downfall last week. It’s a terrific German film about Hitler’s last days. Magda Goebbels, wife of Joseph, murdered their six children because she didn’t want them to live in a world without Hitler and Nazism. True story. She gave them cyanide.

  2. With him greenlighting the fossil fuel industry, and the planet on the brink of IRREVERSIBLE climate disaster, it won’t be one kid…it will be ALL THE CHILDREN OVER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. FACT.

  3. Ursula, I agree it’s madness. I guess they are so narcissistic and greedy, they don’t give a damn about their own children or future generations. They have the money to run to the best places, thereby avoiding the worst effects for the longest time. Too bad there aren’t more ghosts name Jacob Marley to crack their obsession with gold. It’s up to the rest of us to stop them.

    • Definitely madness, the billionaires must see their wealth as power to evade and escape the cataclysm their actions are leading to; IMHO, SpaceX is Musk’s introductory stage of an eventual migration to Mars program for those who can afford the exorbitant fare, leaving the bourgeoisie to deal with the deterioration and ultimate destruction of the Earth’s climate due to their excesses.

It’s also my view that the Earth is unique in our solar system for its ability to support life as we know it, so while the climate deterioration may lead to a Mad Max-style post-apocalyptic period, the end of industrialized society will allow the overheated climate to cool back down and society to reestablish itself, hopefully having kept records of how it all went wrong the first time.

It’s possible, though, that the apocalypse will result in total destruction and the end of mankind; to paraphrase George Carlin, “The planet will survive, but humanity is screwed!”. In that case, once conditions on Earth stabilize, the evolution process will restart, giving mankind, or whatever results, a second chance to get it right. The process may take a million years, or longer, but given the infinite scope of the universe, a million Earth years is infinitesimal.

Either way, the billionaires’ Mars colony won’t last more than a generation before being wiped out, either from the inhospitable Martian environment or mechanical failure of their structures (asteroid strike?) and leftover debris will intrigue future scientists when the future Earthling society regains the ability to explore space and discovers its remains.
