This is one of the best written commentaries on the Trump years that you are ever likely to see. It’s written in the style of a law review article, which was described to me once as a “trickle of commentary amid a tributary of citations.” Here, the tributary of citations leads us down to the crashing rapids of falsehood that is the Trump hallmark. Indeed, as much as he brags about all he has accomplished over the past three and a half years, “more than any president in history,” his 20,000 and counting lies are arguably his only real legacy.

These are the lies that Trump supporters must tell themselves every day in order to stay Trump supporters. This is delightful as satire, but have you ever stopped for a moment to think what kind of shape you have to be in mentally to think this way?  Washington Post:

I believe that if Biden is elected, there will be “no religion, no anything,” and he would confiscate all guns, “immediately and without notice.” He would “abolish” “our great,” “beautiful suburbs,” not to mention “the American way of life.” There would be “no windows, no nothing” in buildings.

I believe the news media would have “no ratings” and “will go down along with our great USA!” if the president loses — and that this would be bad even though the media is fake.

I believe it’s normal for the president to say “Yo Semites” and “Yo Seminites,” “Thigh Land,” “Minneanapolis,” “toe-tally-taria-tism,” “Thomas Jeffers” and “Ulyss-eus S. Grant.” I believe it’s Biden who’s cognitively impaired. […]

So I believed the president in January and February when he said covid-19 was “totally under control,” that it was Democrats’ “new hoax,” and that he was “not at all” worried about a pandemic. I believed him in March when he said he “felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.”

I believe the president and the doctor who believes in demon sperm and the medical use of space alien DNA, and not Anthony S. Fauci, who’s an “alarmist” and “wrong.” […]

I believe it isn’t racist to call the coronavirus “kung flu” or “the China Virus.” It isn’t racially divisive to say Black Lives Matter is a “symbol of hate,” to celebrate Confederate generals as part of our “Great American Heritage,” or to share video of someone shouting “white power,” which, like displaying the Confederate flag, is “freedom of speech.” […]

I believe that a 75-year-old protester in Buffalo may have been “an ANTIFA provocateur” who intentionally cracked his own skull in a “set up.”

I believe Rep. John Lewis made a “big mistake” not attending the president’s inauguration. I believe the president has done more for Blacks than any other president — perhaps even Abraham Lincoln, who “did good” although the “end result” was “questionable,” and certainly more than Lyndon B. Johnson, who signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which hasn’t “worked out” so well.

There’s much more, so I hope that you read this piece in its entirety, even if it’s the only one you read today. This is an epistle, if ever I’ve seen one.

I find myself wondering — again — how George Conway can stay married to Kellyanne. And I’m not one for celebrity gossip, truly. It’s just that their lives during the Trump administration have been such unbelievable polar opposites. She spins the web of lies in which Trump dwells, while he takes the garden hose to it. It simply mesmerizes me.

The only explanation that will ever make any sense, is if at the end of the day it comes out that Kellyanne Conway is the author known only as “Anonymous.” Barring that, perhaps one or both of the Conways would be good enough to explain it all at some point, just so that we can learn something undiscovered about human nature, and/or the institution of marriage. I wait with bated breath.

    • And that’s not just U.S. president, but president of everything from the local high school class to the smallest business in the most out of the way town. If he’s a leader, we’re better off with anarchy.

  1. I have read in several places that they really love each other and never talk about Trump or politics at home. This puzzles me, too. How can they not talk about those when they talk about what they have done each day.

    • Same way a Fed with security clearance talks about their day. You talk about process, you talk about co-workers’ and bosses’ shenanigans, about the printer that crashes only when you have an urgent meeting and are printing briefing matter, you leave out identifying information that could compromise your work.

You learn how. Since most of the stress ultimately comes from people anyway, you find ways to describe it that get the point across without revealing anything you can’t because of the job.

  2. I have a theory that Kellyanne is an undercover member of the Lincoln project planted in the tRump White House to get the goods on him and others. When it’s over, she and George will make millions writing a book and speaking about tRump’s corruption and retire to an island off the coast of Malta. (Hey, it could happen!)

  3. I think the conways wrote the book.

But i also think they made a calculated dishonest decision to play both sides so they are “relevant” no matter what. Do not trust them. Look at who they have always been. Leaks go both directions!!!

  4. Hi Ursula! It’s very refreshing to stop in here, as always. I think of Politizoom as a small constellation – a group of stars :-).

Quick apology. I saw an offensive comment a few days ago and tried to downrate it, clicked the wrong side. (My laptop’s touchpad is treacherous.)

I think the ratings gizmo let me remove that accidental uprating, but I don’t think it let me downrate the comment after that. I am sorry. One of the things I try to do here is downrate the spam and the trolling meanies.

  6. This is so refreshing to read: all the craziness seeming to be perfectly normal and sane; and in the blase words and phrases the utter insanity shines through. Conway has a gift he does!!
