F. Scott Fitzgerald discerned what made the uber rich tick almost one hundred years ago, when he published The Great Gatsby in April of 1925. That was the period that Fred Trump was still amassing his fortune. About a decade later he would marry Donald’s mother and begin a family. Here is what Fitzgerald learned about the rich and what we all are learning now.

“Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves. Even when they enter deep into our world or sink below us, they still think that they are better than we are. They are different. ”

One way in which Donald Trump is different from the vast majority of men is that he can buy a woman that suits him. That is the reality of his life. The rest of us normal people have to develop whatever charm, looks, social attributes we have in order to attract companionship or a mate. Trump has never had to do any of this. He’s never had to interact with a woman based on his worth as a man, (and boy would I like to see him find out how well he would do on that level sans money) only on the value of what he has in the bank and what doors he can open for someone. He made that clear in court today.

A New York Times article describes how Michael Cohen was told to “get control” of the Stormy Daniels issue. Cohen testified Trump said, “Just get past the election. If I win, it’ll have no relevance when I’m president. And if I lose, I don’t really care.”

The piece continues

Here the prosecutor, Susan Hoffinger, asked if Cohen inquired about Melania Trump. He said yes, and said Trump responded: “Don’t worry. How long do you think I’ll be on the market for? Not long.”

The writer then said, “Wow. With Trump, every time you think he’s touched bottom, he crashes through the floor. Here he was already looking ahead to his third divorce.”

Wow is right. The man came out and admitted that he regarded his wife as fungible goods. If she’s not here, he’ll find another pussy to grab, no problemo. That’s the Trump *marriage* in a nutshell. Trump found Melania and paid for her and he can find another Melania. And after this is all over, he may indeed be on the market.

One thing we heard about today that really stood out for me, and I’ve just finished talking about this on Brad Bannon’s show Deadline: DC, is that we heard Michael Cohen say that Donald Trump was treating his wife, Melania, basically, like she was disposable.

He said that first of all, it was Melania Trump’s idea to present the Access Hollywood tape as “locker room talk.”  And then right after that, Cohen says Trump said he needed to delay payments to Stormy Daniels until after the election because the story wouldn’t be relevant if he won, and if he lost, “I really don’t care.”

He said he didn’t care about Melania and that even if she left him, basically, he would not be on the market for very long.

Now, the reason I’m highlighting this for you guys, is that that is a really ugly thing for a political candidate to say about their wife.  And who does Trump need to win back? He needs to win back those suburban women who vote Republican, some of whom peeled off because of the abortion issue. And he’s been losing them ever since that.

So he cannot afford to lose Independent women and he cannot afford to lose those suburban Republican women. And I think that as horrible as this is to think about — because to me, Donald Trump has already shown us who he is, and it’s not a great record as far as women are concerned there should be no questions: He’s an adjudicated rapist– However, many of his supporters have managed to ignore all of that. But I think that knowing the way that mindset works, where it’s very patriarchal and the women who buy into that know that they’re at risk all the time.

Are they going like hearing from a political candidate that they’re garbage that can just be thrown away and replaced with somebody else? I don’t think that’s a great message and I think that if that message gets out more, that’s going to be potentially very damaging for him.

I think this is another thing Cohen said that Trump said to him, “This is a disaster” when it originally happened, that when Stormy Daniels originally made these claims, “Women are going to hate me. This is a disaster. Women will hate me guys will think it’s cool, but this is going to be a disaster for the campaign.”

That tells you so that was established today. Furthermore, Cohen did establish that that Donald Trump was concerned about thisdue to the campaign and not due to his wifeAnd that’s the other thing of other piece that that the Melania comment does put together.

I took it in a very different direction because, to me, I was thinking about it politically. But it also makes a very important point for the prosecution. Because they need to be able to prove that Donald Trump did not do this for personal reasons, but he did it for campaign reasons, and clearly he did.

That’s what today’s testimony told us about Trump. And it also told us one hell of a lot about Melania, none of it flattering. She’s the one who came up with the idea of the locker room gambit.

For those who think that Melania Trump is any different than her husband, Cohen’s testimony disproves that notion. Melania Trump has continued to stay married to man who bragged about sexually assaulting women on tape and was later find liable for a rape in civil court.

Given this context, it is no surprise that she came up with the talking point that bragging about sexual assault was locker room talk.

Melania Trump is the least popular first lady in history. In January 2021, she left the White House with more people disapproving of her (47%) than approving (42), and Cohen’s testimony showed exactly why.

The least popular First Lady married to the worst president. That’s who they are. Theirs is a transactional marriage and one that Trump was only too happy to be out of if that’s the way things rolled. As it happened, he won the White House and so an extensive negotiation was done for Melania’s services to come to Washington and deign to serve as our First Lady and deal with nonsense like “fukking Creesmuss decorations.” When she said, “Who gives a fuck about Creesmuss decorations? But I have to do it, right?” that said everything about her that we ever needed to know.

The only reason that that shocking tape did not get far more airplay and discussion was because the day it came out was the same one that it was announced both Trumps had COVID. The Christmas tape came out in the afternoon and in the wee morning, about 2:00 a.m., news broke about COVID. That was a blessing for Melania, in a sense, because it spared her the scrutiny and criticism that she deserved.

Melania called Stormy Daniels a “porn hooker” and Daniels shot back,

“Although I wasn’t paid for sex and therefore technically not a ‘hooker’ I’ll take being that over what you are any day,” tweeted the adult film star, who allegedly had an affair with President Trump. “You sold your pussy AND your soul…and I’m legal. Keep talking about me. I like your new tits btw. Post (more) nudes?”

Melania Trump has zero right to cop a stance of moral superiority to anybody. She is a hooker. Trump paid for her and theirs is a contractual relationship. But this is who the Party Of Family Values would return to the White House.

  1. The lost divorce rates are in MA,NY, and California Arkansas has the highest . When it comes to teen pregnancy rates, Mississippi Arkansas are tied for highest, and the new England states have the lowest. Guess abstinence only sex ed doesn’t work very well. And these are all ultra conservative and evangelical states–i.e. red states, and Trump’s based
These states all have abortion bans and have basically said who cares if the woman dies? He can get a new one, younger, thinner,,and blonder. Because that us how they view women: pu$$ie$ and uteruses on feet,$_ interchabgeable.not you believe Eve is responsible for every bad thing by taking a bite of that apple, women become lesser, so ful creatures that most be controlled by a an, and thus not quite human. When you dehumanize women,, you can justify letting them bleed out from.a miscarriage or sepsis or pre-eclampsia. Dying from.something easily treate? Back to the sin of Eve.

    • This rant is from twenty years ago. I checked back then and the claims held up. I can’t say every stat still holds true but the last time I did actually do some checking on things like who sends more to the federal govt. than they get back, and divorce & teen pregnancy too things hadn’t changed much. I don’t think the fuckthesouth website this originally was posted on exists anymore (sadly, like the NH Gazette’s ChickenHawk Hall of Shame it went by the wayside – or forces with butt hurt fee fees shut it/them down) but luckily The Stranger still has it.
