One thing about McConnell, he’s predictable. You’ve got to give him that.

    • That is exactly the case. Minutes after she died Joni Ernst sent out a fundraising email about “saving the Supreme Court.” It goes to show you, when the stakes are high, nobody even puts up the pretense of waiting respectfully while the dead are put to rest.

    • Don’t pick on vultures. Vultures provide a public service.

Clinton is on TRMS right now saying the Senate should use all procedures possible, but should also make it a political issue. Go down fighting, her words.

    • Champaign corks have been popping in GOP households all over the country this evening. Along with pulling up clips of George H.W. Bush’s smirk when he nominated Clarence Fucking Thomas to replace Justice Thurgood Marshall. THIS is what the Federalist Society has been quietly working since the 1980s for. To remake not just the federal judiciary to their “justice for all if you happen to be a white male of means & influence and fuck all the rest of you” image, but SCOTUS itself. And to EVERY single Democrat, or Democratic leaning Independent that either sat out or voted third Party in 2000 and 2016 because our candidate wasn’t “pure” enough for you FUCK YOU ALL TO HELL SIEDWAYS WITH A RUSTY ROLL OF BARBED WIRE!!!!!!

Many of us tried to tell you this was the agenda of the GOP since before 2000. That Republicans were working their voters on this one issue, and using abortion as a cover for a far wider range of roll back of rights but nooooooooo. You didn’t want to hear it. Your self-righteous, smug insistence on complete ideological purity will punish untold generations of Americans. You belong in the very same circle of hell you so fervently believe Trump (and McConnell) should be consigned to.

      • Denis…ENOUGH. Woulda, shoulda, coulda is a waste of everyone’s goddamn time. There’s still the matter of getting Trump to play ball, which he won’t do unless there’s something in it for him. And don’t be fooled by that list he put out last week…the man’s word has never been his bond.

        • You keep making the statement here and in other places of saying chill out because Trump is going to make sure HE gets something out of appointing someone to replace Ginsburg that will be even worse than Bush 41 replacing Thurgood Marshall with Clarence Thomas. Fine. You want to know what’s in it for Trump?
Then please, please consider this: As a person, and given his long and sordid history of a life lived in contravention to everything hard core right wing “Christians” profess to believe in (including being pro-choice until he decided he’d actually mount a Presidential campaign) he had to do something to convince them to stick with both the GOP and him. Judges and Justices was the Faustian bargain that was struck – with the Federalist Society greasing the skids. Not that the latter didn’t want Roe v Wade overturned (and other reproductive freedoms like birth control again made illegal – after all THEY could afford to send their wives, daughters and mistresses to other countries for such things!) but they had an even larger agenda. So the Federalist Society teamed up with the Heritage Foundation and McConnell and presented Trump exactly the kind of “transactional” maneuver that was in Trump’s wheelhouse – pledge to nominate judges and Justices like those on this and other lists WE will provide you and we can deliver the “Christian” voting block that has been so hugely important in politics since Reagan first reeled them in. As I said, whether reproductive rights or other issues none of it would matter to a rich guy like Trump.

Now, while the leaders of the RWNJ “Christian” movement got on board Trump still had to convince them he was really serious, as in serious enough to sell the whole thing to the rank and file “faithful flock.” That’s where Pence came in. Picking him for the VP slot solidified Trump’s support to that part of the GOP. And Trump, ever the transactional guy who knew that he’d need that crowd made good on his promise. Being the type of asshole he is I’m sure he ENJOYED watching liberals howl over his choices and McConnell’s slamming through all those judicial confirmations!

The “deal” is already in place. It’s been there all along. The hard core fundies detest Trump but hold their noses and vote for him because he promised, and has delivered on his promise to appoint judges and Justices hostile to abortion and other reproductive rights – including birth control. Yes, the hard core ones consider most forms of birth control infanticide! Trump NEEDS these hard core right wing “Christians” to turn out in droves for him to have any chance at keeping his ass from being financially ruined and even jailed. Without them he’s toast. HE HAS NO CHOICE but to quickly nominate someone to the Court who is openly hostile to abortion and other reproductive freedoms. It’s either that or convince Putin to have some oligarch with an American flagged yacht just outside our territorial waters to take him and his Secret Service detail aboard after the inauguration of Biden – and then force the Secret Service detail into a powered life boat with a marine radio with which to call the Coast Guard after it’s out of jamming range as the yacht takes Trump further out to sea.

Trump HAS to have that religious “right” vote. Period. He either comes through or he’s deep in the cesspool of his own creation.

THAT is what’s in it for him. Oh, I don’t doubt that he might try to grab some extra scratch. You’re right about that I think. But he won’t spend much time doing so because early voting is already underway in some places and a shitload of ballots are already out there in people’s hands waiting for the date they can be returned. Trump doesn’t stick to his word very often, but even a stopped clock is correct twice a day. Regarding this promise (which he reaffirmed last night) this is one of those two times. And being Trump he gets to experience his perverse pleasure in torturing us liberals!

  1. Per CNN Collins, Murkowski, Graham and Grassley are all against filling Justice Ginsburg’s seat before the election…….no mention if they would agree to filling it during the lame duck period following the election.

    • Grassley is against it? Now that’s interesting. I wouldn’t have expected him. The others have an agenda I can more easily perceive, but I’m lost where Grassley is concerned.

      • Here is Grassley’s quote per CNN……

“Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley said in July he would follow the Biden rule, “I’m just following what was established by the Biden Rule in 1986 and then emphasized by him in 1992… They set the pattern. I didn’t set the pattern. But it was very legitimate that you can’t have one rule for Democratic presidents and another rule for Republican presidents.”

  2. May all the deities witness that he’s in violation of the duties he swore to undertake when he first entered the senate (too many years ago).

  3. It’s really tough for me to read the print in McConnell’s statement. Getting new glasses has turned out to be a charlie fox but if I’m correct McConnell’s statement is a lie, because there has been an example of a Senate held by the Party in opposition to a President confirming a nominee – and in an election year.

I refer you to retired Justice Anthony Kennedy. When Justice Powell resigned Reagan had problems with his first couple of nominees, but after lengthy vetting (Reagan’s second nominee admitted to using weed) Anthony Kennedy’s nomination easily was voted out of committee for consideration by the full Senate. His confirmation vote took place in early February, 1988 – an election year. Both before and after the 1988 election the Senate was controlled by the DEMOCRATIC Party, which ironically would increase it’s majority from 54 to 55 that November despite a Republican winning the WH to follow Reagan.

Kennedy gets confirmed almost exactly eight months before a Presidential election. Garland doesn’t even get to meet with GOP Senators as McConnell declared he wouldn’t even be allowed a hearing in the GOP controlled Judiciary Committee, much less a vote on the floor.

Oh, guess who happened to be Chair of the Judiciary Committee during all this?

Then Senator Joe Biden of Delaware! Yes, the very same Joe Biden who became Vice President and is now our nominee for President! “Biden Rule” my ass!

One last point. And McConnell should be reminded of it every fucking day. While Joe Biden was efficiently doing his Constitutional duty and holding a hearing for Kennedy, and then taking part in the full vote to confirm him IN AN ELECTION YEAR ole Yertle had a ringside seat – he was first elected to the Senate in 1984! So hell yes – throw that in his face every time he’s on camera!

  4. He’s bluffing in the hopes of the wailing wall antics I’ve been hearing all night. One, did you expect to say anything else? And two, are you gonna just take it? Myself, I’ll spending my weekend texting voters, like I would have done otherwise because it’s the only way the nightmare ends. If you can donate some coin, Google “Get Mitch Or Die Trying”, a fund set up by Crooked Media for campaign pushback. They already got over 7 million in the last few hours…let’s double that.
