Personal admission. I’m a Matthew McConaughey fan. I especially liked his role in The Free State of Jones, but then I love historical pieces. But he is also a proud gun owner, a father, and most importantly a son of Uvalde.

Who better than an actor to handle the White House press corps? But McConaughey delivered a tour de force, not as an actor, but as a grief stricken father, gun owner, and son of Uvalde, who had gone home to grieve with the families.
And it showed. Because McConaughey let his own emotions show. His voice cracked when he talked about the lost children, he slapped the lectern in frustration. And you could hear a pin drop in the White House briefing room.

But then McConaughey sent a shot across the GOP and NRA’s bow. He talked about growing up in Uvalde, starting with a BB gun, then working his way up to a shotgun, then learning the responsibility of caring for the awesome weapon he was using. He affirmed that he was a responsible gun owner.

And then he went for broke. He called on all of the other responsible gun owners to back responsible gun reform. And he quoted that 90% of responsible gun owners back the simple legislation already in the House and Senate. He opined that, as a gun owner, he was sick of the 2nd Amendment being hijacked by maniacs. And then he took the kill shot. He called on all responsible gun owners to be a part of the solution, pointing out that no Democratic or Republican principle had ever been espoused by a mass murderer.

MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace picked up on it immediately, in a conversation with Fred Guttenberg, the father of a Parkland victim. He was saying how much he admired and supported CT Senator Chris Murphy for going balls to the wall, and noted that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to utter the word gun in a public statement.

Wallace was ready. Her responded with, Yes! But that was the power of McConaughey’s statement, wasn’t it He put responsible gun owners right in the middle of the conversation, telling them they needed to step up to back common sense gun reform. He made them stakeholders. And that’s the last thing that McConnell and the GOP want, They want responsible gun owners feeling isolated and under siege by the left, the last bastions of 2nd amendment rights.

And there you have it, right there. The rotting tooth in the GOP’s NRA mouth. The GOP needs every gun owner to feel like they’re under the gun, that their guns are going to be taken away by the men in the black Suburbans if they don’t hold strong. If responsible gun owners actually start voting their conscience, instead of their NRA ideology, that could be a disaster for the GOP.

Let’s be clear. There’s nothing that Matthew McConaughey said today that is going to swing a single GOPtard vote in the congress. But that may not matter. Because if McConaughey convinced any other responsible gun owners out there that their rights are not at risk, and the reforms are moderate and common sense, then it may just make a difference in November. Don’t touch that dial.

  1. The game is always for the voters in the middle, Murf. Those are the ones who decide the winners, as any hardcore political junkie like us are a mortal lock in our affiliations. McConaughey just made the midterms dicey once again for the GOP…and he did by being a human being.

PS My favorite of his is always going to be The Lincoln Lawyer.

  2. I also.loved Free State of Jones and many others. Good man. It won’t move the needle for diehard moronic Trump fans, but those independents are the ones we need, along with suburban women.
