I don’t think for a second Clinical Psychologist Mary Trump, PhD takes any satisfaction that her warnings about her uncle Donald, yes President Donald Trump were accurate. Yet she’s chosen to speak up and in effect say ‘Take a good look at what you’re seeing. I told you what was coming and any person can see how obvious his mental decline and general craziness is.’
In this article from Leisurebyte Mary Trump bluntly lays it out how her uncle, the President’s metal deterioration has become quite evident:
Speaking on The Daily Beast podcast, she drew a direct parallel between Donald Trump’s current state and his father’s battle with Alzheimer’s disease. During the episode, she spoke to Joanna Cole about Donald Trump’s Operation Epic Fury, rising gas prices, and his questionable Truth Social activities.
The author of “The Reckoning” asserted that repeated annual cognitive assessments point to a “serious and obvious cognitive decline.”
That last part jumped out at me. Why? While not nearly often enough it’s starting to be mentioned by pundits that cognitive exams aren’t given just for the hell of it. They are given because a doctor has reason to want to check how (mentally) oriented a person is. They aren’t IQ tests, but rather assessments of basic stuff like a person knowing who they are, where they are, general circumstances and simple information. The fact Trump has had so many and more importantly several in the last year alone should be of concern to everyone. Mary Trump goes on to say there are ‘more and more similarities’ with Trump and his father (her grandfather) who had serious Alzheimer’s. She also points out Trump’s father Fred was around the same age when his symptoms became evident.
The linked article has a clip of Mary she posted to her Instagram that I can’t seem to insert here but it’s sobering. She talks about how he’s being confronted with actual limits to what he can do and how he can manipulate people’s (and country’s) perception of him. She also expresses concern about how much damage control we can accomplish if sane people (her term) are again in charge.
I’ve talked about this lots of times in the past. The free world treated Bush 43 as America’s “Mulligan” (a free golf stroke granted after a disastrous one) and the election and re-election of Obama seemed to get us back in good standing as the leader of the free world. Then Trump made it into the WH via the Constitutional vestigial organ known as the Electoral College (just like Bush 43) and the world began to realize the U.S. as they knew it had changed. A lot. Biden made serious progress unscrewing Trump damage but the world suspected that every four years the U.S. and it’s leadership in the world was ‘up for grabs.’ That our word was only good for four years at a time and 2024 drove the lesson home. The United States won’t be the undisputed leader of the free world again in the lifetime of anyone currently living. If ever.
That’s why what Mary Trump is telling us is so important – the rest of the world can see with their own eyes Trump’s obvious decline and worse, that half our country can’t, or does but is too fearful or power hungry to do anything about it. From where I sit a quarter of the way through the 21st Century the rest of the world can see the rotted roots of the America that led the world to victory in WWII and afterwards. And worse, idiotic Trumpian notions have taken root like weeds. They can be pulled up just like I’d watch my neighbor Mr. Weber do growing up in a large yard he lovingly maintained. But it was a never ending thing because by the time a weed could be seen it had spread underneath the soil.
Mary Trump also makes the point that aside from the mental/cognitive comparison between Donald Trump and his father that Fred’s physical health was better:
“But my grandfather was a much healthier physical specimen, and also as a sociopath. My grandfather didn’t really have any emotional or psychological world that could impinge upon him. So Donald’s already at a deficit,” she said.
The list of things we’ve regularly seen keeps growing. The bruising on the hands. Swollen legs. Leaning/unsteadiness on his feet. Foot dragging sometimes. Now we’re seeing impairment with at least one arm. Trump has long shown a deficit in use of his tiny hands – watching how difficult it is for him to take a sip of water for example. And of course the nodding off during meetings which is a regular thing now. I can’t help but wonder when he’ll nod off in his golf cart and hurt himself falling out with the sucker zooming along! Mary Trump sums it all up and it’s not a pretty picture she’s painting:
Beyond the genetic comparison, the psychologist pointed at what she believes is a foundational mental health challenge. She highlighted “disorders” that she claims he possessed even before his first term in the Oval Office.
“I think we’re at a perfect storm of horrors for Donald, because yes, we’ve got serious and obvious cognitive decline. I don’t know about you, but I have never taken four annual cognitive assessments in one year. So that’s a red flag.”
“We know that there are serious physical ailments that the white House, of course, is not addressing. And the cognitive decline is obvious to anybody who’s an objective observer.”

Did you catch the part about aides being sycophants? That’s being generous. These are more than ‘fluffers’ – they are the pornstars who service a guy ‘to completion’ on camera. In the linked article she calls out (“Little” – to use Trump’s term) Marco Rubio in particular:
Mary Trump then ripped into Donald Trump’s closest aides like Marco Rubio, who won’t call out his cognitive decline just to stay in power.
“Marco Rubio, who also committed perjury when he lied about the size of the shoes Donald gave him.”
“So clearly, I mean, he wouldn’t answer a question about who won the 2020 election because they can’t. Telling the truth about Donald Trump is to get fired. And these people are so desperate to hang on to their proximity to power and their positions at the expense of the United States of America.”
Like I’ve said the rest of the world, both friend and foe can see all this plain as day. Half of our country is either too stupid or refuses to believe the evidence of their own eyes and ears, think ‘owing the libs’ or gaining/retaining power is more important than the country their children and grandchildren will have to live in. Buried inside is the once hopeful guy who believe to the core that despite our flaws a great majority of Americans were also hopeful – even if many had different views on how to make us better. I’m a senior citizen now, an old fart who has sadly accepted half our country consists of selfish and/or stupid assholes.
Still, if not by much there are more of us who believe in the America we once assumed would always exist, even if we made some mis-steps now and then. With Trump having screwed up so badly and in so many ways this year we have a chance to clean out enough Republicans in Congress to stop the bleeding. Actually sewing up so many of the wounds will take both regaining the WH in 2028 and retaining control of both chambers of Congress.
