MAGAs Howl “Taylor Swift’s Giving NFL GIRL Cooties!”

MAGAs, especially guys are seriously losing what’s left of their minds over a reported budding romance between a couple of famous people – Singer/Songwriter Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce. Being a Chief’s fan since I was a kid in the 1960s I know a fair amount about Kelce. He’s one of the more visible stars on one of the NFL’s more visible (in recent years) teams and arguably the best tight-end in the game – the favorite target of even bigger NFL star Patrick Mahomes.  Swift is a music icon and a star of international stature. Her Eras tour reportedly will make her a cool billion dollars. (Sorry Trump – she won’t be donating a single dollar to you and she sure as hell won’t be your Ivanka substitute either!)

I read what for me was a partially (only partially because of what the fact it was written at all tells a sad, ugly story about part of our country) amusing story in Salon earlier today. The into paragraph was quite basic, including something about most normal people wishing the new couple well. Then the author dove in:

There was one group of people, however, that displayed alarmingly over-the-top anger at this low-stakes celebrity hookup: Right wing dudes on the internet. They’re so mad you’d think their own wives left them for Kelce, and not some singer-songwriter they’ve never met.

Things only grew worse for them Sunday night, when Swift went to the Chiefs vs. New York Jets game with her Hollywood friends, drawing even more camera attention. There were even ads for the documentary of her “Eras” tour this summer, rubbing girl cooties all over the NFL, at least in right wing eyes.

Now, if you aren’t familiar with my writings others who are can tell you in comments one thing I am not is up to speed on popular culture and who’d drawing the most interest on social media. But hell, even I know Swift has become a true cultural icon, a force in pop culture and beyond. I’ve seen pictures of her like everyone else but as I told someone earlier today if my life literally depended on it I could hum, much less sing a few bars of one of her songs. (Same for Katy Perry, Beyonce too) I’m what they call clueless when it comes to such stuff. Been that way for decades. Back in late summer 1984 I got “that” look when a group I was with was carrying on about the movie Purple Rain. I asked what was so special about it and they said it starred Prince to which I replied “Who the f**k” is Prince?” Hence the look.  I was clueless when Kim Kardashian became a social scene “icon”, and as I’ve noted there are musicians that are huge stars I know nothing about other than their names and being able to ID them in pictures.

Which reminds me of something else from the linked article about MAGA guys saying she’s “mid”, or not good looking etc. Sure a-holes. Like you wouldn’t think you’d died and gone to heaven if she invited YOU home for a night of wicked delights. Give me a freakin break. The more they deny the more they admit they fantasize about Swift or at least someone who looks like her. Same with the comments about Kelce and his manhood or what they refer to as lack of it. They WISH they were as big, strong, handsome and athletically gifted as he is! Not to mention way rich and headed towards insanely rich. And he’s already got Super Bowl rings and the possibility of enough for an entire hand before his career is done. Someday when he’s being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame tell me all about what a talentless wimp he is you pathetic losers!

Anyway, one thing I actually however know about Swift is her following is both huge and passionate. “Swifties” as they are apparently called brook no criticism of her and I’ve read stuff from parents including dads that have taken daughter to her concerts that are gushing in their praise of the experience. I read one that described it as being wrapped up in a warm, loving and magical cocoon.  Ok. To each their own. I’ll stick with my classical (esp. opera) and classic rock. Anyway, I DO know that a couple of years back Swift had an intense debate with her inner circle and especially her parents. As a Tennessee gal she simply couldn’t abide the candidacy of now Senator Marsha Blackburn and felt she should speak out. Her inner circle was aghast at her taking the plunge into even a state matter, albeit one for national office. I saw a clip the other day of part of the discussion and clearly they had been begging her to stay out of hot-button social issues. Like LBGTQ, reproductive rights and such. Swift however stood firm and told them she HAD to speak up.

Turns out her family’s worries she’d face the fate of The Chicks, once known as The Dixie Chicks were unfounded. Sure, she took grief from conservatives who tried to to to her what they’d done to The Chicks, and she became an even BIGGER star.  I read some days ago an article I can’t remember that basically said MAGA was making a mistake taking on the Swifties because they were going to lose. And look even dumber than they already do for having tried.

As for Kelce he earned the ire of MAGA world because of two things they hate – Bud Lite and Vaccines. Kelce has done ads promoting both and recently took part in an ad that combined the two. Talk about a “suck it MAGAs!” ad. Then news started coming out that something something might be brewing between Swift (who writes songs about about past relationships like every other writer performer you can name so what’s the BFD?) and Kelce. Then Swift showed up at a Chief’s game, appearing in the skybox with Kelce’s mom! OMFG said the social media world.  Me? Yawn. An NFL star dating a lovely and famous woman. Again, yawn.

THIS however wasn’t just waving a red flag at the MAGA bull, but TWO of them at pissed off already rabid MAGA bulls. A week or so ago I saw something (a Tweet?) talking about how Kelce needed to just cut off his “junk” and complete becoming the “girl” he’s always been. To which I thought “Line up across from him on a football field and see what happens. You can tell us after the trainer revives you with smelling salts!” I’m a big guy (6’4″) and was once a helluva athlete but Kelce is in another world from what I was at my best then, or later as a Marine Grunt. Bigger and stronger. Tough as nails too.  So I found that kind of talk about Kelce funny. Disturbing to be sure but funny jealous.

Look, more often than not celebrities wind up dating and even sometimes marrying each other. Objectively, given the six-month plus demands of an NFL season and year-round training as well as other commitments Kelce has a very full plate. Swift, given her touring (worldwide mind you), songwriting and record making/producing and her own commitments has an even fuller plate. Kind of hard to see how these two could make a go at a lasting relationship but if they want to try I wish them the best. From what I know or can tell both are really good people and would be regardless of their fame and money. Both appear to have been raised “grounded” by good parents.

But MAGAs? They flat-out HATE each of them and did so even before their apparent romance. And the hate now is way the hell more than doubled, especially when you have human pond-scum like Stew Peters calling for them to be executed.

However, as the author of the Salon piece notes the NFL has had an overall conservative bent, and so does much of its fan base. Still, despite all the controversy former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick started by kneeling during the National Anthem and so many others joining in the NFL makes as much money as it ever did. So let’s be honest and grab the Brain Bleach because you damn well know MAGA women would love to be wrapped up in Kelce’s arms for a few hours and MAGA guys would want the same with Swift.

As I said, if it wasn’t for some of the truly sick commentary going on out there the whole thing would be funny.
