Lutnick Questions Pence’s Grasp Of Reality For Pointing Out the Obvious

Again, the same pattern rears its ugly head. The billionaire boys club which is Trump, Musk, Lutnick, McMahon, Bessent, Witkoff, and the rest of them, evidently believe that they can gaslight Americans into believing that tariffs are a good thing. They are not a good thing. And the promised “discomfort” will not be “temporary.” Once you screw with global relationships, that’s it, barring extreme readjustments. In Trump’s first term he alienated our good neighbor to the south and so Mexico began doing a lot of automotive trade with Argentina. Now Trump is out to further alienate Mexico, and Canada, and now the world. To his credit, Mike Pence is standing up and calling Trump’s bluff.

This is what’s happening in the real world. But Lutnick says it’s not. Lutnick is chastising Pence.

Gee, Howard. If ever there was a time to explain to the world exactly what it is that both Mike Pence and the financial markets have wrong, this is that time. What is it that nobody understands except Trump’s inner circle? #TrumpRecession is trending and don’t expect that to stop anytime soon. There is no rational excuse for what he is doing.

And while Lutnick is explaining, maybe he could explain the following. How are Republicans going to stay in office once people see and/or experience:

1. Increases at the grocery store (rather than the decreases on Day One that Trump promised them?)
2. Increases everywhere?
3. Decreases in their 401(k)s?
4. Decreases in any and all investments?
5. The tens of thousands of people that have lost their jobs? That’s a lot of people. If it didn’t hit you, the chances of it hitting a relative or a friend are large.

See, the issue here is that Trump and the billionaires are detached. This is all some social experiment to them. It’s like the yous and mes are an ant farm or something and they’re going to play with our economic ecology and watch us from above and see what happens.

Only they don’t realize how intricate these issues are and how connected everything is. And most importantly, that elected Republicans are ants, too. The laid off/fired government workers are likely not going to vote Republican again. The people who voted for Trump hoping that he would deliver on his promised miracles of low grocery prices and an end to the war in Ukraine on Day One are likely to not be so quick to believe bullshit promises again.

And never, ever forget for a minute the biggest undeniable fact of all: Trump only won by 1.5%. That is not a mandate, not even close. So Trump proceeding as if he has carte blanche to tear down the society and rebuild it in his own cockamamie image is simply lunacy. Even his own former vice president is calling this out.

And what I personally love the most is that Trump frequently crows, “This is the most successful 100 days of a presidency in history.” First of all, he’s not passed the 100 day point and secondly, there is no presidency in history that began its first three months with a major scandal, stagflation and a recession. And that is precisely what is going on here in Trump 2.0.

The delusion is frightening. The only question now is how long is it going to last before somebody puts on the brakes? When the day has come when the likes of Pence, Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell are the voices of reason, you know we are in a dark passage.
