One of the duties of the Secretary of Defense is appearing with the commander in chief on Memorial Day. It doesn’t look from this photograph like Pete Hegseth is enjoying himself. The setting is Trump disgracing himself during a brief speech honoring a member of the military because the man was a cryptologist. This is not only a field unknown to Trump but the very word itself is way beyond his 200 vocabulary word limit. Trump’s speech writers have long been cautioned not to trip up the ignoramus with words over his head but this time it was unavoidable. And so the result was what you would expect.

So that’s the main story here. But Pete Hegseth, sitting in the background with a squint and facial expression which looks pained, is another story. What’s up with that?

  1. Trump has a full diaper?
  2. Hegseth is hungover like mad and the light is killing him?
  3. Some gaffer who doesn’t like Hegseth decided to shine a light right in his eyes?
  4. All of the above?

Remember, we live in a reality TV show. Anything is possible at any time. The idea that something stupid and outrageous will occur on any given day is virtually an assurance. If you’re looking for sane and reasoned discourse, that’s where you’re going to find yourself coming up short.

Would it be so hard to: 1. Read the freaking speech in advance? 2. Somebody else read the speech and warn him about the word? Or, is it possible that people have tried that, to no avail? Frankly, I would have to believe that. Everybody in Trump world has seen him falter over polysyllabic words. But then again, they’re so used to ascribing Trump’s faux pas to fake news, maybe nobody wants to actually avoid the next embarrassing stunt.

And this is actually a common occurrence. Trump constantly is asking reporters in the Oval Office to repeat things, either because he never heard of what they’re talking about, or if the have the slightest regional or foreign accident, it throws him for a loop. So English to English translating is the watchword of this administration.

Interesting image and it certainly applies here. Trump is senile but everybody got up in arms over Joe Biden’s aging. The double standard in this country is shocking but it is not new. This has been the case for some time, it’s okay if you’re a Republican.
