Today was an historic moment when the Supreme Court that Trump has come to believe is “his” SCOTUS actually ruled along conservative principles rather than partisan principles, as feared. This is one of the best days for America since Trump retook office. SCOTUS’s decision to block the president’s power to issue tariffs under the emergency powers law proves that checks and balances still exists in this country.

Trump, for his part, went off on a tantrum, claiming among other things that he “could still destroy the country” by imposing a 10% tariff “across the boards” on global imports, which is certainly saying the quiet part out loud. He also seethed that SCOTUS was “disloyal” which underscores Trump’s expectation that SCOTUS is there to back his play rather than interpret the Constitution as written.

It’s curious that SCOTUS is even involved in debating a principle so simple as the fact that a tariff is a tax and it is Congress’s job to impose taxes, not the executive branch’s — but there you have it. That was the issue that was decided and Trump’s infantile response to same.

  1. Ok……so now the Captain Chaos Crusaders will have to pay back businesses for the monies they illegally collected (stole)……that’s all just good and fine.

So who is going to pay back the average Joe and Joan Slob, the consumers who were gouged by the companies to make up for the cost of the tariffs, or are we simply left holding the bag again as usual???

    • We’re left holding the bag, and you know prices aren’t going to come back down, dammit. Trump does so well at screwing the people of this country.

  2. Listening to snippets of his speech it seems he will just defy the SCOTUS and keep the tariffs in place, adding an additional 10% across the board. He called the Court’s ruling an opinion and said he would let the lower courts litigate refund claims. So, if the markets were looking for certainty and stability it won’t be coming anytime soon. This guy is doubling down and will destroy either himself or the country come hell or high water. I’m laying odds on the former and hoping it comes sooner rather than later.

    • Since he’s ignoring the Supreme Court, which is the highest legal authority in America, if he has the balls to ignore them, it seems there’s not a damn thing to be done to rein in Trump. That hurts. We get a big legal decision that could change the US for the better, and Trump is ignoring it? We’re fcked. (Pardon the language, but I am angry and depressed.)

I detest him more every damn day. No one will lay the beatdown on Trump. I guess we’ll have to flip Congress and take it from there *sigh*

      • The silver lining to Trump’s cloud is that his actions unite so many people against him, Democratic ascendancy seems assured in any next election. (In all senses of the word ‘Democratic’)
