This is another one of those slightly strange statements from DHS. They still don’t think. They assume. And assumptions will bite them in the arse. There is an ongoing partial DHS shutdown because some Democrats finally put their foot down and refused to go along with the renewal. We want changes. We *need* changes. This can’t continue. This does not have to do with TSA or air controllers. It sucks that they’re getting caught in this, less so for TSA, who are mostly assholes anyhow. This concerns ICE and CBP. It’s past due. With gratitude to Raw Story:

Political analysts and observers bristled on Tuesday at the White House’s latest concessions in its bid to reopen the Department of Homeland Security. President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, and James Braid, director of the Office of Legal Affairs, wrote a letter to Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Katie Britt (R-AL) updating them on the latest negotiations with Democrats on Capitol Hill. The two parties have been negotiating funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which was shut down on Feb. 13 when Democrats refused to support an appropriations bill.

Concessions should have been in quotes. We all know damn well that it’s going to take one helluva lot to get any changes made. But they are out of control, and for once, we are being stubborn about something. It’s about time. Let’s *keep* being stubborn. We could at least improve *something* in our country, which is regrettably rare these days. We need more spines, because it looks like it’s going to be a fight just to *have* the midterms.

Some of the concessions that the two Trump officials offered include requiring DHS to “follow current law” regarding Congressional visits to detention centers, expanding the use of body-worn cameras, and “codifying” the practice of not detaining American citizens, according to a copy of the letter obtained by Politico. Analysts and observers seethed at the list on social media. “So basically nothing,” Josh Breisblatt, a Democratic attorney on the Senate Judiciary Committee’s immigration subcommittee, posted on X.

Follow current law. Now isn’t that rich? They know there’s a law, and they do NOT follow it. That’s quite a blunder. There are doubts about the cameras being turned on, let alone worn. Not detaining citizens? They’ve been dragging them off even when they *do* have the correct identification. And it doesn’t matter what color their skin is. The best part of the letter is the line “do not apply to undercover officers.” What does that say to you? More undercover than “regular” ICE agents? Yep.

“Aside from sensitive locations, there’s little here addressing the tactics that caused the most chaos in Minneapolis. It’s sad that simply adhering to the law is even considered a concession from the White House in order to fund DHS,” Andrea Flores, a former White House staffer, posted on X. “Not present in this offer: any requested changes to 2025 DHS policy allowing agents to forcibly enter homes of people they wish to arrest/deport without a signed judicial warrant,” Benjamin Weiss, congressional reporter for Courthouse News, posted on X. “A big Trump admin bargaining chip is that they might — POTENTIALLY — commit to following the law,” political organizer Seth Pollack posted on X.

What a bunch of hooey. Their “concessions” are anything but and do not address the events that triggered the mess in Minneapolis. We lost two *American citizens* to people with twitchy trigger fingers. We have groups of people assaulting one person. We have roving gangs grabbing anyone they please. And I’m preaching to the choir. We all know this, and DHS isn’t offering a damn thing to solve anything. It’s all words and no actions. So how in the hell do we get them to do what needs to be done? Is there a way?

See you soon!

Friends, I know everyone begs you for money. I promise that among all those asking for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a group of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. The rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the chance to keep telling the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula
