Victor Frankenstein came to regret the creature that he cobbled together on his work bench in the laboratory after it got beyond his control and began killing people and destroying things. I daresay Mitch McConnell knows how Dr. Frankenstein felt, and all too well.

The GOP was only too happy to coopt the the TV game show host for its uses. For a while, quite a while in fact, they labored under the delusion that they could make Donald Trump “be presidential.” They simply knew if the pig would hold still long enough for the lipstick and the rest of the makeup job that all would be well. And it never, ever happened.

George Conway was one of the clearer eyed observers of this phenomenon, although he freely admits it took him a while. He voted for Trump in 2016 because he thought that Trump had it in him to become a president. Conway says now that it was all his projection and the left wing was correct in its panic at the time.

Conway was interviewed recently by Salon. Here are excerpts.

Conway predicts that if Donald Trump faces incarceration or other serious punishment, he will turn against the Republican Party and seek to destroy it in an act of revenge. Ultimately, Trump’s lasting legacy may be the destruction of the Republican Party as the political monster turns against its host and creator. […]

[Conway speaking] Trump is in a downward psychological, emotional and physical spiral. His embrace of QAnon shows how extreme his deterioration is. But here is the problem for the rest of us: Donald Trump is not going to go away immediately. He is going to try to use the electoral process, and threats of violence, to regain power and influence. Then Trump will say that he can’t control what people do because they are so angry at how he is being treated by Joe Biden, Merrick Garland, the DOJ, the various prosecutors and judges, the news media and so on. Trump is going to make things much worse in this country before things finally get better.

If America were actually healthy, then Trump would be gone, a non-factor. In all likelihood, I believe that Trump gets the Republican nomination in 2024, unless he goes to prison before then. If Trump is convicted or it looks like he is going to be, he will try to take down as many people as possible with him. That’s what malignant narcissists do.

There are all these pronouncements from pundits that Trump is done for and everything is going to be OK. That’s wishful thinking. Trumpism and neofascism cannot just be wished away.

I hear you, but I believe we should take some solace, in that the reckoning is finally coming. At the very least, the Mar-a-Lago documents investigation is the most dangerous thing facing him. Almost from the moment it came out, I felt it was the shortest distance between him and an orange jumpsuit, for the simple reason that it is a simple case.

The analogy I like to use is this: Let’s imagine that you are the U.S. attorney in New York, and you’re investigating a mob boss. You’re putting together a massive RICO case with lots of crimes involved, such as murders and gambling and loan sharking. It’s a complicated case and all of a sudden you get a phone call that there is a jewel heist at Kennedy Airport. Guess who is driving the truck? The Don, the boss. That’s almost literally what happened with Mar-a-Lago.  […]

With all the other legal peril Trump is facing, he is going to threaten violence as a way of getting out of trouble. I don’t know whether or not he will be as successful as he was on Jan. 6, but there is going to be some real pain in this country caused by Trump calling for violence by his followers. […]

Trump is also going to cause damage to the Republican Party. The party is finally going to realize that Trump will take them down with him. It is going to be very ugly all around. In the end, though, it will get better. Once Trump is dealt with, there’s the other problem that must be confronted: Trump let all the termites into the basement of the house. The Big Lie and the election deniers and all the assorted lunatics who have taken up residence in the Republican Party and are now its base must be pushed out. We need two functioning, normal political parties that support democracy in this country. Right now, we only have one, and that is the Democrats. I don’t know what’s going to happen next — perhaps the Republican Party will collapse and something better will replace it.

As you know, that is my pet theory, that the GOP as we know it is going to collapse, as the Whig party did in the mid-1800’s, making way for the current Republican party. I don’t see how there is any other way.

  1. “… the GOP as we know it is going to collapse … making way for the current Republican party.”
Could you translate that please? What is “the current Republican party”? It’s the GOP, isn’t it?

  2. I find myself taking the George Conways, the Rick Wilsons and the David Frums less seriously as time goes on. Mostly, it’s because they keep playing up the threat of Trump while ignoring (willfully or otherwise) that our government is currently in the hands of someone other than idiots.

So it is here. The destruction of the Republican party is their true fear. Any talk of harm to the country from them is self-serving BS, fully intended to do a little grift and influence-peddling of their own. Never EVER forget that these people cheered on all the disastrous decisions that led to Trump and now want to wash their past sins away in the waters of forgotfulness. They are our allies of the moment, nothing more. All the ugly goals that MAGA screams through a bullhorn, they will work towards silently. And that goes double for Liz Cheney, their eventual queen.

      • You deserve zero credit, MAGAlorian, for an insight that anyone with ten working brain cells could work out. I never forgot who they were nor how you are no better. Them or you, you are ALL my enemy. And I look forward to helping wipe your little cult out first.

        • You have until the midterms and the Democrats are done.
“Them or you, you are ALL my enemy.” Funny you don’t sound like a Demorcate.
“Democrats are the party of inclusion. We know that diversity is not our problem—it is our promise. As Democrats, we respect differences of perspective and belief, and pledge to work together to move this country forward, even when we disagree … we do not merely seek common ground—we strive to reach higher ground. ”

          • I am indeed a proud Democrat…the kind that remembers little bullies like you and calls them out. Some of your cult can be talked out of your collective delusions and it is good, worthy work. But that’s never been me. I’m much better-suited to identifying threats and the useless hangers-on who make them. I can neither be shamed nor initimidated. So NEVER mistake me for a doormat.

      • The lady that runs this site is a nice lady that works very hard to have a nice clean community of people that can exchange their views with each other in a peaceful manner. You, on the other hand are someone who comes here to disrupt and trash the people and their opinions here. Your only purpose is to disrupt peaceful conversation. You are the epitome of the maga troll. You are not wanted here. You need to go to truth social or whatever hole you crawled out of. Have a nice day and don’t let the door hit you in the ass upon exiting.

  3. He and his sycophants are trying to incite violence by saying the Democrats are killing Republicans. I am fearful of this upcoming election. I think it will be Leticia James that brings charges that cause Trump to be arrested because she has no fear.

    • She also has no case. 7 years of investigations and you people act like it’s the first one. 7 years of investigations and nothing. 7 years of investigations and them lying to you. What’s wrong with you people.

      • I beg to differ. She definitely has a case. The only reason trump hasn’t been indicted before now is because he keeps getting away with obstruction. But guess what. He ain’t president no more. His little games aren’t going to work much longer. Between the New York case and the documents case it’s a crap shoot which one files first. And don’t forget. We still have the Georgia case. They just did some tinkering there. You are an insult. Why don’t you go play in traffic. Please go somewhere. Your stench is clouding my sinuses.

  4. Mr. Conway is belaboring the obvious. It does not take much a a prognosticator to foresee trump doing such a thing. In fact, it is a stretch to think he’d do anything other than this.

  5. First of all, since as a former President he is entitled to Secret Service protection forever, any conviction and a sentence that would normally warrant incarceration will be modified to permanent home confinement, with the SS agents taking the place of the corrections officers.

I have no doubt that if he is found guilty of any serious charge, and he should be, he will attempt to whip his core followers into a violent frenzy. He is bereft of conscience, ethics, and morals. But on a bright note, I like the idea that he might destroy the Republican party.

    • I also feel that should there be some miraculous intervention by a sky wizard and tantrumthinskin not only gets indicted, prosecuted & eventually found guilty, that he won’t do even 1 hour in jail. He’ll be given ‘house arrest’ under SS protection. Not just that but he’ll be given ‘work release’ and ‘exercise’ and his life ‘under house arrest’ will be indistinguishable from the life he lives right now. He’ll summer in Jersey golfing everyday, winter in Florida golfing everyday and year around grifting off his slack jawed zombie cult, who, for some reason choose to not be tethered to reality and think him ‘clean’ despite the fact he’s been sued for fraud time & time again, despite Trump lying constantly about easily verifiable things. One ex. Is Trumps claim that the Mueller report was an ‘exoneration’. Only a slack jawed drooling zombie cult member willfully ignorant of the reports contents actually believe that. But I digress. I don’t think Trump will receive ANY kind of ‘punishment’ even if he is miraculously indicted, more miraculously prosecuted and even more miraculously found guilty.

    • One can only hope on destroying the party. And you are right. Trump only gives a dam about trump. And the whole point of him doing anything is that he’s addicted to people telling him what a smart guy he is and how great he is. Both of which are total lies. In reality he is a demented two time loser.

  6. Let him incite what ever he wants! People act like the people who oppose and want nothing more than to dispose of trump have no arms and like they are not ready TO FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY! I for 1 am VERY READY!!!!!!
