Donald Trump is almost out of time, and he has to know it. Because what just happened today is as close as you can come to taking out a front page on The New York Times and announcing it.
Like Babe Ruth standing in the batters box at Wrigley Field and pointing out to the center field scoreboard before launching one right there, Fulton County DA Fani Willis has just called her shot on her final timeline for indicting Donald Trump and possibly more than a dozen others.
In a letter from Willis to the Chief Judge obtained by The New York Times, Willis advised the judge that she was asking the majority of her staff to work from home, and for judges in the courthouse to avoid scheduling trials for select dates in the first three weeks of August. She gave her reason for the precautions as possible public disturbances following the unsealing of criminal grand jury indictments during that time period. The time frame matches, since a new grand jury will be empaneled in the first week of June, giving Willis the chance to lay out her case and ask for indictments.
This can mean only one thing. Trump. Is. Going. Down. Like a cardboard sailboat. For one simple reason. Although there are more than a dozen potential criminal targets in the investigation, the only one with the notoriety, platform, and far right mob to cause possible civil unrest is Trump. The logic is simple.
This report today tells me someth9ing else too. It tells me that Special Counsel Jack Smith now has a deadline to face. The DOJ was the first one out of the box to open an investigation into the January 6 Capitol insurrection, they’ve been at it for more than two years. The DOJ already let Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg scoop them by being the first one to come out and criminally indict Trump. Does anybody here really believe that a DOJ Special Counsel wants to let the Fulton County DA steal most of what’s left of his thunder, leaving him the one late to class on final exam day?
Here’s how I project it going from here. Smith is still trying down the last necessary testimony and information on the January 6th case. But the Mar-A-Lago case, by all accounts is an already constructed steel cage, with Traitor Tot’s name on it. Sometime between now and August 1st, I expect Garland and Smith to hold a press conference to announce criminal indictments against Trump in the documents case, including charges for violations of The Espionage Act, for a little sex appeal. Then when the J6 case is ready, they can hold another presser, either announcing superseding indictments to include the J6 charges, or just make it its own freestanding case.
But now at least we have a basic timeline. And I fully expect to see at least one perp walk. Trump has spent the last two years reviling, mocking, and taunting Garland, Smith, an the DOJ. They’ll want some payback, and they’ll get it. If for no better reason than because the federal courthouse in Washington DC is much better protected than the Manhattan courthouse. The Secret Service be damned, El Pendejo Presidente gets the full monty. Prints, mug shot, and perp walk. Good times coming.
