Please do not mishear me. There is no reason that an American president – any American president, should stay clear of a major sports final involving Team USA in just about any context… with this possible exception. Canadians are absolutely furious with America and Donald Trump – if you think that it’s hard to bring conservatives and liberals together here in the U.S., you’ve never tried in Canada, and yet Donald Trump has managed to do it, where even the Quebecois, the normally separatist French liberals, are suddenly waving Canadian flags and rallying around Prime Minister Trudeau, this is one of Trump’s major accomplishments. It has caused Canadians to be uncharacteristically aggressive, with big time support from American liberals, in that Canadians loudly booed the American national anthem in Montreal last Saturday, and the game had three fights in the first nine seconds (These are also grudge matches from the regular league, but man – when gloves and helmets come off with the drop of a puck… ) and the final is to be played Thursday night in Boston. The Americans invited Donald Trump… I think this is a horrible idea. Things could get dangerous.

Imagine, Trump up in the owners boxes, probably saying something before the game, and again – perhaps fights before the game reaches the five second mark. Not only that but this game is for the championship, so the goals matter as much as the fights.  From a report in JoeMyGod:

The USA hockey team would “love it” if Donald Trump was to attend their grudge match against Canada in Boston on Thursday night. The two nations played out a brutal game in Montreal on Saturday, which saw three fights inside the first nine seconds. Tensions were running high throughout after Canada fans, in front of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, furiously booed “The Star-Spangled Banner” as it played pre-game.

Speaking on Fox News on Monday, the US team’s general manager Bill Guerin spoke out on the chaos. “Canada-U.S. is a huge rivalry in hockey,” he said. “I think there was a little bit of a political flare to it. It’s just the time that we’re in. I think our guys used that as inspiration. If you let it get the better of you, then you’re in trouble. But I really do think the players used it as inspiration.”

Before one brags, perhaps consider what they were inspired to do? They made fools of themselves a bit. IF they want to support their country, they should do so by setting an example for the crowd to follow, “We can put the politics behind us and play the damn game, can’t you just be respectful” – shaming the crowd into more appropriate behavior? More commentary:

Again, under any normal circumstances, of course send the president. But this president is the one who has been talking a gang of shit about 51st state stuff, calling another world leader (And one that is very respected, Trump best be careful, Canada has a lot of friends across this globe) an American “governor”?? Threatening to essentially take Canada over? Yes, that’s going to cause a lot of animosity. If Canadians are booing national anthems…

There is far more of this than you think on X:

Picture this. Trump shows up in Boston, and acts all tough and staring the ice down. It becomes almost obvious what he expects having flown up for the game. Fans from both countries boo each others’ national anthems, louder than ever before. The fights start the second the referee drops the puck, only this time the president is there to cheer people on, so there is more than one fight at a time (Inherently dangerous, usually against “code” because there is no one to separate people once they go to the ice, where things get real dangerous real fast as heads bounce off hard ice), additionally, fans start to get into it – they’ve been drinking, they’re offended others are booing their national anthem, suddenly there is violence on and off the ice, the American president is above it all, the situation is increasingly dangerous…

It could easily happen. And even though I’m as big a hockey fan as exists, having played the game in college myself, and I love the idea of a major showdown – because I suspect Canada, with Crosby, McDavid, and MacKinnon – the best line in history, will likely win any final rubber match, and I want that game badly, believe that Trump should steer clear because this game could just as easily get ugly as iconic. It could go either way, but it’s a far more dangerous situation with Trump there than without.

Please just stay away. Normally it’s a privilege to play in front of a president or Prime Minister (Perhaps Trudeau should go and stare Trump down?), but in this case, everything should be done to taper emotions, not enflame them.

  1. I’m sure Musk closing the John F Kennedy library in Boston, his home territory, isn’t going to sit well with the home crowd, although the working class hockey fans will just get drunk and rowdy, and most don’t shit about shinola. Funny how hypocrisy works…we Americans would raise even more hell than the Canadians if the shoe was on the other foot. Of course, hypocrisy is now our national religion and political future.

Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

We do NOT want Justin Trudeau on US soil for this game. I seriously wouldn’t put it past Drumpf to have the Prime Minister “detained indefinitely” (aka, “kidnapped and held hostage”) until Trudeau signs whatever documents Drumpf presents him turning over Canada to US control.

In fact, I’m hoping the Secretary-General of the UN is making plans to move UN sessions to some other UN facility for the safety of the various heads of government who’ve criticized Drumpf.
