Ron DeSantis is about to join Scott Walker in the history books. Who? Precisely. Walker had a campaign that was like a busted rocket back in mid-2015, it rose quickly and then it fell back to earth even faster. Likewise, Ron DeSantis was considered DeFuture by none other than Rupert Murdoch, shortly after he won reelection to the governorship of Florida by 20 points. That was then and this is now. Lincoln Project nails it, as usual.

DeSantis is painful to watch. A lot of people don’t “do” television easily. Ironically, neither does Donald Trump. You need only ask the film editors who cut his takes together to form a decent product for 14 years on The Apprentice. He was a bumbling, stumbling mess. But he got enough experience to do short moments in front of a crowd with a teleprompter and the rest, as they say, is history.

DeSantis just can’t get comfortable either with the camera or with people, particularly with people. You could forgive him his camera awkwardness if there was some genuine charm there when he interacted with folks. Wrong. He comes across as a stranded extraterrestrial, trying with all his might to fit in and be thought part of the human race.

DeSantis has always intended to be the understudy. His entire campaign has been about positioning himself as the heir apparent when Trump, for whatever reasons, incapacitation, incarceration, something renders him unable to wear the GOP crown. That’s when first runner up DeSantis is supposed to step forward and lead the way, carrying the party to victory.

Nobody knows what’s going to happen, especially right now this moment. But it is known that DeSantis goes lower with each poll and he doesn’t have much money. Not a good position to be in.

But that’s not what’s really tanking him. It’s his overwhelming discomfort being in his own skin which has people turning off. And Trump may be turning off a lot of people as well with his stupifying legal problems.

Hard to know what will happen but since the Lincoln Project is based in Florida and they’re so certain DeSantis is toast, I can’t see any reason to say them nay. DeSantis is putting all his eggs in the Iowa basket. And he might well win there. Does he not remember that Ted Cruz did just that and then washed out?

Incredible as it seems, 2024 may end up making 2016 look somewhat tame.

    • I prefer DeSaster. it is what he has done to FL. Ten major conventions have cancelled. Others will too. They cited “A hostile climate for business.” That Disney lawsuit is the cause. He is suicide g the state’s largest taxpayer and third largest employer, and a place that hosts a lot of conventions and school trips. He cannot run for a third term without someone else being governor. By that time, FL will getting back its feet, and his appeal.will be nonexistent and his political career will be over be.
