This is pretty scary. But it is happening. The Social Security Administration sent out an email earlier Thursday evening to people on Social Security. You should have gotten yours, too, if you’re old like me. Here’s the text of what it says: “The Social Security Administration (SSA) is celebrating the passage of the One Big, Beautiful Bill, a landmark piece of legislation that delivers long-awaited tax relief to millions of older Americans.”
The bill ensures that nearly 90% of Social Security beneficiaries will no longer pay federal income taxes on their benefits, providing meaningful and immediate relief to seniors who have spent a lifetime contributing to our nation’s economy.
“This is a historic step forward for America’s seniors,” said Social Security Commissioner Frank Bisignano. “For nearly 90 years, Social Security has been a cornerstone of economic security for older Americans. By significantly reducing the tax burden on benefits, this legislation reaffirms President Trump’s promise to protect Social Security and helps ensure that seniors can better enjoy the retirement they’ve earned.”
The new law includes a provision that eliminates federal income taxes on Social Security benefits for most beneficiaries, providing relief to individuals and couples. Additionally, it provides an enhanced deduction for taxpayers aged 65 and older, ensuring that retirees can keep more of what they have earned.
Social Security remains committed to providing timely, accurate information to the public and will continue working closely with federal partners to ensure beneficiaries understand how this legislation may affect them.
You read it. And not only are you reading it here, and in your inbox, Trump bragged about it in Iowa late this afternoon.
Trump: Just as I promised, we’re delivering no tax on social security for our great seniors. Right?
(This is a blatant lie. The “Big Beautiful Bill” does NOT eliminate taxes on Social Security.)

I guess we’re all supposed to believe this. And then in April of 2026, or whenever we file our 2025 taxes, we’re going to expect something to happen that isn’t going to happen. We find out then that this was not in the Big Beautiful Bill. Although we all got a memo from Social Security.
And what’s next, mass hypnosis? Yes, yes, we remember it all now. We did get some kind of a tax cut. Why oh why do we all remember it but it’s not here on the tax return? What could have possibly gone wrong?
Can you figure this out? All that I know is that Trump is in control of the government and he and his cohorts can send out whatever they bloody want to on official channels. Lies and all.
Just one more sub-basement. There is no low they won’t go.

From what I could pick up it’s an increase in the seniors’ deduction, which would boost that from the current $17,000 for a single person over 65 to $23,000. That would reduce his or her tax payment by $600-700. So they still pay tax on their pension income.
Not sure when this kicks in. It may be fiscal year 2027, which is when Medicaid cuts happen, conveniently after the mid-term election. It will last only four years, and for most seniors who lose Medicaid it’s not going to come close to covering their medical bills.
You would think SSA would try to provide a detailed explanation in their email, but instead they just shovel the crap trump is producing. Sends chills up my spine.
You did better than I did in parsing through that. All I saw was the crap shoveling and not the likely details. I couldn’t get over the basic stumbling block which is that Trump is proclaiming to the world that this is in the BBB — and it’s NOT in the BBB. This is how it’s going to be nowadays, he says one thing, the actual law on the books saws something else.
This is an example of where Trump opponents absolutely have to crank up the communications.
I’m going to be eager to see how many outlets run a news story on this.
During his July 4th speech, on OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY, he openly declared war on all democrats, whom he repeated he “hates”. Hmm…seems like the last time an evil dictator did that…11 MILLION people were systematically murdered.
Every other real president in this country has made an effort to unite people. Lip service, maybe, but that’s a hell of a lot higher road to take then “I hate them.” We’re not supposed to be warring tribles, we’re supposed to be one nation with two major parties, with some policy differences.
I get Social Security, because I paid into it for decades when I worked.
So I get this email from them but only go to read it after I see this story here on PZ and read some comments on Joyce Vance’s Substack. Of course, I’m horrified by the text, or even the reason for sending it out.
Many of the comments on substack say: “I’m gonna report this email as spam!” Do they not understand that all this does is banish a valid email address from popping up legitimately on their computer or other devices?
I also wondered if it was actually from ssa.gov or it actually was from all the hacked personal info that the DOGE cretins stole.
Kinda like T1.0, the Trump Checks,
There’s probably a lot of people on Social Security who this will fool, even after they file their taxes. Lots of them have CPAs who file their return, and they don’t bother to check it to know what income and deductions are included.
