Leonard Pitts of the Miami Herald has had the same amount of success in reaching Trump’s most diehard supporters as you and I, which is none. A little over a month ago he declared that he had given up all attempt to reason with these people. Pitts faced outrage from readers who believed he needed to be convincing Trump supporters that they supported a pretender, a fake, and a criminal. To demonstrate the basis for his decision, he published Trump supporters’ own words.
Despair ensued:
Sample One from “Robert”:
“President Trump has accomplished more positive things for this nation in less than two years than the last three have accomplished in twenty plus years. After the past eight years of a Muslim Marxist in the White House this nation could not survive another demwit (sic) in the White House,” Robert wrote. “Could you please list one thing the demwit party has done for the black people in America other than hand out government freebies for their continued votes?
Obama did turn us around during the worst economic crises since the Great Depression, saving the auto-industry while at it, but Pitts is right, Robert cannot see that.
Let’s go to Gary:
“America has a Constitution which guarantees equal rights for all and yet people like you hunger for change that puts people like me in the back of the bus. You seem egar (sic) to know what it would be like to be in the driver’s seat. You need look no further than Zimbabwe and South Africa. When people like you started driving the bus, the wheels came off. That’s what terrifies people like me.”
Guess what? Pitts is black, in case you couldn’t figure that out! I guess that guy is tired of having black people get all the riches and power that American confers and wants to take control back from black people. But, Trump isn’t a racist?
“We’re sick of paying welfare to so many of your brothers who don’t know what work and integrity mean. I hope you keep writing these articles and reminding my White Christian brothers that we did the right thing and we need to re elect Trump.”
If you’ve picked up a theme here, good for you, you are able to reason. Of course this is why so many Trump supporters are “unreachable” – a large part of it is pure racism, which is by its nature, beyond reach.
Of course, out loud, most national Trump supporters say it’s not about race. As Charlie Pierce often sarcastically writes, of course it’s not about race because nothing in American is ever about race.
Pitts didn’t cherry-pick, either. He had his assistant simply pick mail from one average day to demonstrate we’re not talking about average people. It is scary, because Germany had been the most sophisticated nation in the world when it began to blame all its ills upon one ethnic group. At some point, most Germans became beyond reason, too.
