I am heaving a sigh of relief. This issue today was far far beyond a disgruntled old man with a dictator complex ordering the unfair firing of a highly educated professional woman. The First Amendment itself was on the line and CNN didn’t completely trash their credibility by caving in to Trump’s demands. Good for them. So the free press lives another day, albeit under seige. Washington Post:
“We stand 100% behind Natasha Bertrand’s journalism and specifically her and her colleagues’ reporting of the early intelligence assessment of the U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities,” CNN’s communications team posted on X. “CNN’s reporting made clear that this was an initial finding that could change with additional intelligence. We have extensively covered President Trump’s own deep skepticism about it. However, we do not believe it is reasonable to criticize CNN reporters for accurately reporting the existence of the assessment and accurately characterizing its findings, which are in the public interest.”
CNN was the first to report on the Defense Intelligence Agency assessment on the damage done to Iran’s nuclear program. Other outlets, including The Washington Post and the New York Times, have also reported on the assessment. While Trump claimed that the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities was an unmitigated success, the report states that the strikes did not destroy the core components of Iran’s nuclear program and probably set it back by several months, not years, one of the sources consulted by The Post said.
Earlier on Wednesday, Trump said on Truth Social that Bertrand should be “reprimanded, and then thrown out ‘like a dog’” for her work reporting on the assessment.
“Her slant was so obviously negative, besides, she doesn’t have what it takes to be an on camera correspondent, not even close,” Trump posted.
It’s the last part that particularly incenses me. The woman is a highly educated professional, not some Fox News blonde with too much makeup and too little fabric, there for eye candy. Natasha Bertrand was educated at Vassar and the London School of Economics. Trump, on the other hand, was called “one of the dumbest goddamn students I ever had,” when at the University of Pennsylvania.
But it’s pure Trump, that he just can’t talk about any woman unless he makes some reference to their sex appeal and whether they’re “his type” — as if any woman cares what this fat, bald imbecile finds physically attractive. Frankly, I think the women he’s disparaged this way (including E. Jean Carroll’s lawyer, not just E. Jean herself) should find it a badge of honor that Trump doesn’t think you’re down to his “standards.”
In all events, reporting on Iran and the Middle East will continue. And Trump can huff and puff and threaten to blow all the media outlets down but so far it’s not succeeding — although ABC and CBS are willing to buy him off, to buy peace. What a world we live in.
