With every flip of the calendar this election draws nearer and please forgive me for saying it but the news is not good. No, the weekend saw new polls issue that demonstrate that Kamala Harris’s August and September bump has come back to the mean and that Donald Trump has risen back to at least 50-50 in this election – with his supporting troops seemingly ready to go to fight out a protracted battle for the White House. If that sounds ominous, then you haven’t taken the next step and considered what might happen if Trump finds himself back in the Oval Office.
To the extent that it is still an issue it is more likely than not that Trump will squeak by in the Electoral College for a victory under the Constitution. The Electoral College is such that a tied national average is not good enough in the race to 271. But if he doesn’t win under the Constitution there is too good a chance that the Republicans in Congress will somehow manage to only certify a vote in the House of Representatives. It is that bad, get ready for a protracted fight in Congress.
This isn’t set in stone, it is likely the path as things stand now. Things can change, indeed – they should, there is still time. To that end, people need to consider what might happen if Trump assumes office again and it is as militant and vicious as you might imagine. James Carville appeared Sunday with MSNBC anchor Jen Psaki, and predicted what might happen under a Trump administration:
How about looking at American history for one time and see what can happen here. And they are telling you we’re not making this up. This is not we can be fact checked by anybody. They have promised military round up. They’ve promised the gates of hell will reign on the enemies. The Supreme Court has greenlighted it. They were asked the question, if a Navy Seal is ordered to assassinate a political enemy — nothing wrong with that. That’s just part of his job. They are telling you they’re doing all of this. Pay attention to them right now, please. They’re telling you.
It is not quite that easy but it is certainly easy enough. They only need to muck up the election such that Donald Trump can order some – if not all – the military to seize control and it can happen. Whether the military is strong enough to rebut such an order is still somewhat in question.
The only way to really avoid all the above is a fairly resounding Harris victory, one that forces the Right’s hand. I am sorry to be the one to write this but it’s time to absorb that truth. Unless there is work right now to stand up for what you want, stand up against this hate, stand up against raw power, and stand up for democracy, there is little chance.
It starts at home, it starts with commitment, donate some money, ask if you can call those folks in the swing states – by God it is stunning that a decision of this magnitude is left up to voters in about six to seven states, with the rest of the country sitting on the sideline, hoping. It is true, though.
But there it is. I really hate to be the one who is the realist here. All the articles on polls and money and such must be tempered against this reality because it is reality. Perhaps I am too cynical – boy, do I ever hope so. But on this I think I am right down the middle. But we need not “let it happen” to the extent that it is 100% preordained, nor does anyone need to accept it down the road.

I will put my 100 postcards in the mail tomorrow. They are going to registered democrats in Georgia to remind and encourage them to vote.
There is a reason I own firearms and the means to keep them loaded-just in case some pure-d fool like trump tries a stunt like this. If by some weird ass chance he were to set foot in the w.h., my firearms would come out of the safe and every damned one of them would remain loaded until I’m dead or the revolution is over.
