Yet another demented spin in this case and considering the defendant is Donald Trump, that makes sense. Trump is in flight across the Atlantic. (I’m sure Melania is elated to know he’s coming home early.) Judge Lewis Kaplan has given Trump until 5:00 p.m. Sunday to file a motion to reopen the case “for the sole purpose of hearing his testimony.”
So will Trump make good his offer to “confront” E. Jean Carroll, after his lawyer says he won’t? If you’re asking my opinion, no. He was shooting off his mouth to get out of Ireland with some face intact. But the judge heard the news stories and said, fine. Come on down and testify.
Judge Kaplan: "I am not saying I will grant it. If it is made, I will consider it. He has a right to testify, which has been waived, but if he has second thoughts, I will at least consider it."

The judge says he has made this decision due to "news reports out of the British Isles" in which Trump said he would return to the U.S. to attend the Carroll trial.

So: is Trump actually going to be good to his word and reopen the case and testify? Because if he does, then he will appear on Monday and proceed to nail his own coffin shut. Which will be entertaining to watch. So I’m thrilled that he might.
But if he doesn’t move the court to reopen and show up to testify, then he might not be able to file for an appeal. After all, the judge is doing everything humanly possible to accommodate Trump, so it’s going to be hard for him to argue error, bias, anything after being given this 11th hour reprieve to come back and testify, after having once waived the right to testify.
This will be amusing to watch. I’ll be glued to the computer Sunday looking to see what he does.

I’ve a suspicion he was hoping that the judge would say “Too late. Your attorney has said you wouldn’t appear, so that’s an end to it”. He would then use that as grounds for an appeal (or a new trial), claiming that he wasn’t allowed to speak in his own defence.
However, the fact that the judge as said, basically, “Fine – let’s hear what you have to say UNDER OATH” sort of wrecked that plan.

I’d like more details on all this. Such as did Trump get the word that the judge was willing to let Trump’s lawyers have a hearing to re-open the case (which it seems the judge is more than a little willing to do) while on the flight home from the UK? And just what was the plane’s flight plan when it took off from Ireland? To NYC or FL? Where did it land? Did the pilot call ground controllers and arrange a different arrival destination than had been planned? And most of all is something we’ll never know if in fact Trump’s bluff was called while in transit – just what did he say to the pilot (and others) when he got the news the judge said “Ok – if Mr. Trump wants to be heard from directly in court let’s talk about it” and let me know by 5p.m. Sunday? I’m in agreement with the notion that it was all a bluff on Trump’s part – he was just playing both a PR game and trying to set up grounds for appeal. He’d already painted himself into the corner in this case, and it seems to me like he just dumped a five gallon bucket of fresh paint in front of him!
It’s great the judge called his bluff. And I do believe it is a bluff. Perhaps to justify an appeal, maybe not. I believe he didn’t receive a hero’s welcome overseas as President Biden did so he’s heading home and going to hide out at magalardo for when the verdict comes in. He’ll need to be among his admirers if the verdict goes against him. He won’t want to be anywhere near the press at that time. He’ll just go rant on his “truth” site while throwing ketchup at the walls.
