Image is everything

I just wrote an article in which I showed how the Democrat’s complete inability to air their dirty laundry behind closed doors instead of out on public, created a shit show that damaged both Biden and the party politically. But while the party must learn from this mistake, I want to now pivot and show you why it’s not fatal to either of them.

The messy debacle of the Democrats trying to squeeze through both infrastructure bills together led to a rather drastic hit for Biden in the polls. About 10 days ago, a national poll during the height of the sturm und drang showed that Biden’s popularity had dipped to a presidency low of 42%, and Virginia state election exit polls showed Biden at 43%. Not good juju for a guy who had something like a 7 month honeymoon cruise. The Democratic unraveling was dragging him down.

But national news hosts and pundits were quick to point something. If you looked back historically, at exactly the same time four years ago, Trump was at one of the lowest water marks for his entire presidency at 37%. And what was going on in the Trump administration at that exact moment? The GOP was trying to hammer through Trump’s $1.9 trillion uber rich tax giveaway, by reconciliation! Notice a common theme there?

But there was a major difference there. In 2017, the GOP wasn’t having the legislative equivalent to the food fight from Animal House, they were moving lock step towards an already predetermined outcome to sell out the country to their donors. But just what was publicly known was so unpopular that Trump’s national ratings took a nosedive. But while the base absolutely hated the 3 Stooges pie fight over the passage of this bill, the actual contents are incredibly popular. And that makes all the difference in the world.

One down, and one to go. Once Biden has his made for TV signing ceremony, and hits the road a couple of times to highlight areas that will reap the most benefit rom the infrastructure bill, his numbers will rise, and so will the Democrats.

Because, as the old saying goes, A week is a lifetime in politics. Politics changes so quickly, especially in the 24/7 media driven cycle, that it’s hard t generate a scandal with teeth. Once the bill is signed, and the money starts flowing, the construction cones start going up, the lead pipes start getting replaced, and the schools start getting upgraded, nobody is going to remember how ugly the sausage making process was.

Personally, I think that the human infrastructure bill will get through the Senate. The House progressives made things harder than they had to by throwing back in items like paid family leave and Medicare expansion that they already know won’t pass the Senate. But the House progressives put in far too much blood, sweat, tears, and pride to sign on to pass the bipartisan bill last night without rock solid assurances from leadership that the Senate would pass something. And I think that the Biden word is already out in the Senate to give the House progressives something solid to celebrate in their districts. What a way to run a railroad. But it sure as hell is better than what the GOP is doing, and that will count for something.

  1. I agree that the public memory on politics is fairly short. I do hope that Manchin and Sinema’s voters remember their actions, or lack thereof.

  2. I remember Hillary well. BUT she lost because Russia was all over this election & she had a huge propaganda machine as well. And she still beat the orange nazi by 3,000 votes. I try to imagine how wonderfully different the world would be today if we had Hillary in office. This is a tragedy that will have historic repercussions. Tragic & very sad as well
