This is a pattern which keeps repeating, the overperformance of Democrats in special or off-year elections. Trumpty Dumpty might want to take note of this. He did mention today, in a rambling, incoherent speech to House Republicans that it made no sense to him that the GOP is projected to lose the lower chamber in the fall. Maybe somebody should lead him through all the special elections and explain it to him in crayons and big letters. Starting out with, “Nobody voted for a new war and inflation,” maybe he’ll start to get it. In any event, another Democrat has won 69% to 30%. Damn. Now that’s what you call a trouncing. The Hill:

Democrat Mike Jones on Tuesday glided to victory in the special election for a Richmond-area seat in Virginia’s state Senate, according to Decision Desk HQ.

Jones defeated Republican John Thomas in the race to replace Ghazala Hashmi, who was elected as Virginia’s lieutenant governor in November.

Democrats were expected to carry the district, which former Vice President Kamala Harris won in 2024 by 30 points. But Jones’s win is notable because the party has a slim 21-19 majority in the chamber and needs every vote it can get as it looks to move forward with constitutional amendments on redistricting, reproductive rights and other major issues.

Tuesday’s victory will also further energize Democrats after a string of recent election wins and overperformances, including in Virginia, where they flipped the governor’s mansion.

“Dr. Jones’ victory tonight is yet another proof point that Democrats — who remain focused on lowering costs for families — have the momentum across the country,” Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin said in a statement. “In election after election, voters are rejecting Donald Trump and his unaffordable, out-of-touch agenda and are instead putting their faith in Democrats who will fight for working families instead of billionaires.”

How sweet it is. Expect Trump to either completely ignore this victory or to insult the victor. That’s about the extent of his range these days. Maybe he’ll do another 100 posts in an hour texting binge on Truth Social over it.

  1. “How sweet it is. Expect Trump to either completely ignore this victory or to insult the victor.”

OR, and he bruited it yesterday, cancel elections. I can’t conceive how but there may be enough going on in the undergrowth so that legalities and other actions will create enough disenfranchisement and disruption to twist the outcome, if not be the cause for cancellation.

  2. Special election losses be damned, Trump plans to not have any mid-terms on any terms which might endanger his dictatorship. Why do you think he’s exercising (illegal) control over our military? The more he puts troops and various armed goon squads into the streets now, the more we the comatose public will grow accustomed to it. So it won’t be a surprise when those same goons surround polling places come November and keep away anyone who might be a threat.
