It’s nothing short of tragic to observe how Donald Trump is the Ugly American come to life. He is hated and despised abroad. Our former allies ask the same question we do here at home, “Can this be repaired?” I don’t know. We didn’t exactly inspire the world’s confidence during the reign of George W. Bush. Then Trump 1.0 came along and that was a horror. But Trump 2.0 cements the concept that a lot of the American electorate is stupid and unstable. If it were not, why would it vote for somebody fitting that description? Here are a few sad scenes from Trump’s Scotland junket. This is one of the few occasions where I actually agree with Melania. Who wants to show up for this?

The UK and Ireland used to really love the United States. We share a common language and many Americans originally hail from these countries. When I’ve been abroad to these countries, it was always like meeting a branch of the family. Now our cousins abroad are looking at us with their jaws dropped open, “What were you thinking?” And this particular working *vacation* of Trump is a real farce.

Like the golfing world doesn’t know this about this man. Like there haven’t been books written about it. The only spectacle more ludicrous than this, if that’s possible, is Vladimir Putin out on the ice playing hockey. Suddenly all defense simply melts away. World class players become barely able to stand on the ice. And that makes perfect sense. If it’s let the dictator win or be shipped off to Siberia, there’s not too much of a choice there.

Behold! The ball appeareth from nothingness! He truly is the worst cheater of all time Chosen One! What is intriguing here is that on some level Trump’s got to know he’s not fooling anybody. Or maybe not. Maybe if you surround yourself with enough yes men and yes women, telling you how wonderful you are, you come to believe it.

That’s a perfect parallel you’ve drawn twixt Trump and Putin, Ursula: their total incomprehension of what “sport” is and should be all about. Y’know, fair play, respect for rules, striving to win but gracious in losing etc etc. Sport as the metaphor for life and how to live it.
