There’s an old expression, “begin as you intend to proceed.” If this is the opening act of the show we’re going to watch for the next two years, I shudder.

Kevin McCarthy blew off any notion that this was dysfunctional. “This is the great part,” he told reporters. “Because it took this long, now we learned how to govern.”

One who was not amused by this display was Chuck Schumer.

You remember when Benjamin Franklin was asked, “What kind of a government is this? And he said, “A republic — if you can hold onto it.” I think McCarthy is in a similar situation. What kind of a Speakership do you have? And the answer is, a tenuous one. If you can hold onto it.

I give it three weeks, max, before Matt Gaetz does a motion to vacate. The seditious six are running the show.

And look at how it’s already shaping up:

I don’t blame Pelosi, McCarthy made that horrible comment about hitting her with the gavel.

It’s going to be a wild two years.

And nothing from Trump. He’s concentrating on having Republican governors stop mail-in ballots. Seriously. He’s stuck like a fly in amber in that, can’t get out.

  1. Bill Palmer’s bet is three months for McCarthy. Longest bet I’ve seen has him at six months. All are in agreement, however, that he will not last the year.

  2. Schumer obviously hasn’t been paying much attention to the descent of the ‘pube party over the years if he thinks the crazies are a fringe element rather than almost the entire party.

This cry baby game of Pelosi’s really degrades only her. She should rise above her distaste for the man and be a class act rather than a political performing clown. Of all that has been going on recently, and it has been a shit show, it will be topped off with her showing a sour grapes attitude the optics of which will harm only the democrats.

    • After six years of dealing with Trump’s ass, Schumer knows what he’s dealing with. And eff Pelosi showing these fools any kind of grace. They made themselves look bad enough this past night to where you can get away with flipping them off. Plus, after what happened to her husband (you DO remember that physical beating, right?) and that last minute burst of violence on the House, it’s less sour grapes and more good sense at work here.

    • Nancy has always been a class act , but she has to come down to their level so they can understand her. Don’t ever under estimate Nancy, she knows how to handle the GOP .

  3. I can understand Nancy Pelosi’s reluctance to appear on the rostrum to continue the tradition of handing over the gavel. And I’ll admit that despite it being a long and difficult day I stayed up to see that moment and was electrified by Jeffries remarks. Still, we’ve seen the GOPers blow off tradition after tradition. Personally, I wish she would have handed over the gavel, with a picture of her husband in his hospital bed wrapped around the handle. Make the sumbitch SEE how fucking disgusting his remark was. Hey, it’s not like the craven asshole would actually follow through on his tasteless comment. And if he was crass enough to try to make light of it by playacting doing it (yes, he’s that fucking stupid) it would be all that the news would be talking about. And the GOP would look all the worse for it.

  4. And THAT, Denis, is why she’s Nancy Pelosi and no else is. Her time as a leader is done and she’s said as much. So any grandstanding like that would have taken away from Jeffries’ moment, which would have been counterproductive. Besides, subtle dissing of this crowd has long been her specialty. Unlike, say, Gaetz, it never comes at the expense of her party. So it is here.

    • You make a good point. She no doubt talked things over with Jeffries about how to handle things when the moment came, and likely had more than one plan in place depending on how things came out. Jeffries “style” is and will be different than hers. He’s already shown a willingness to punch the GOP in the face and do it like Ali in his prime – looking good while doing so. And let’s face it, Jeffries stepped on McCarthy’s moment. He’s simply more dynamic and charismatic than McCarthy’s ever been on his best day. Jeffries served notice he’s going to be out there hammering the shit out of them AND that he will be very good at making them look very bad. McCarthy had that one “zinger” about having had unanimous support as the minority candidate two years ago. True. But despite some drama along the way when the 117th Congress was convened she was quickly elected Speaker with just the one ballot and everything went forward. I’m hoping Jeffries gets out there and makes that point this weekend. And that from the first day of the last Congress Democrats were working hard moving the ball forward. The GOP on the other hand will get into Monday, a week into things and still have to pass a rules package and set up committees!

  5. When the seditionists get control of the house instead of being indicted…buckle up. Maybe Jack will ride in on a white horse and puncture their hot air balloon. Of course the final decision isnt his. Believe it when I see it. Given senator burr wasn’t indicted for clear insider trading when he got privileged information as a member of the gang of eight that he quickly turned into a quarter of a million dollars in his pocket, and called his brother in law who also quickly did his own law breaking, the LAW shows once again that the rich walk. Neither the SEC or Burr’s office had a comment. Shocked, I am. Cue up the pampered middle class white apologists who’ve never had any direct experience with this institutional hypocrisy called the LAW. But but but….Where’s the evidence? In front of your face. You know. Like when 11,000 documents are stolen, lied about on legal paperwork, and contained top secrets, and months later…crickets. And the perpetrator continues the sedition. Perfect.
