Bothsiderism can be amusing and what you’re about to see is Donald Trump taking it to the limit. He posted the video below on his Truth Social account. He conflates the challenges that Democrats made to Russian interference in the 2016 election, and other contests, to the riot that he incited at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. He looks bad, so he’s going to sling mud now.
Just a few points to bear in mind: there was substantial Russian interference with the 2016 election. We saw congressional hearings with Mark Zuckerberg explaining how Facebook was complicit in allowing Russian troll bots to infect the platform and pretend to be the neighbors to influence voters in swing states.
We also learned many things after the fact about Cambridge Analytica influencing the election by harvesting the data of 87 million Facebook profiles and allowing it to be sold and manipulated. So the Democrats you will see below were well within their rights to challenge the outcome of the 2016 election. And as Robert Mueller opined during his investigation, “Russia is interfering in elections as we speak.”
The obvious lesson here that Trump wants you to get is that it’s perfectly fine to challenge election results and so he was within his rights to do so. And we agree. What is not perfectly fine is to tweet at followers to come to the Capitol “will be wild” and it is not fine to tell a paramilitary group, “Proud Boys stand back and stand by” and it is emphatically not fine to give a speech and tell an angry mob to march to the Capitol, “because if you don’t fight like hell you won’t have a country.”
The Democrats didn’t do any of that. Donald Trump did. That’s the takeaway here.
