Maybe Rudy Giuliani had a moment of clarity a few weeks ago when he said through his lawyer, that he planned to be “less confrontational” about replying to requests  for information from the J6 Committee than some of the other members of Trump world had been. That sounded good and then he lost it. As you know from reading it here, impeachment attorney Ron Goldman opined that Giuliani was willing to cooperate with the Committee as a cudgel to get Donald Trump to pay him legal fees owed. That was a rational argument and one that I found compelling.

But a few days later, Rudy flip flopped. And now most recently, there’s this. This is a clip from a right-wing radio podcast and Giuliani is back to the old Antifa, BLM, leftist radicals dirge.

Here he is with his “bonkers new claim” about the insurrection.

Newsweek:

According to the Justice Department, Sullivan was charged and arrested on January 14. A press release at the time explained that he was “charged by complaint with one count of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, one count of violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds, and one count of interfering with law enforcement engaged in the lawful performance of their official duties incident to and during the commission of civil disorder.”

While Sullivan has previously been supportive of Black Lives Matter and left-wing causes, he has consistently denied being a member of Antifa. Black Lives Matter activists in Utah—where he resided—disavowed him in the past as well, accusing him of being an “agent provocateur.” Sullivan said he does not support Trump, but entered the Capitol with rioters to document history.

Trump supporters and allies have suggested that Sullivan was a member of Antifa and working for the government since the early days after the pro-Trump riot took place. The conspiracy theory circulated widely on social media, despite a lack of corroborating evidence. A number of GOP lawmakers and other Trump supporters still claim that left-wing activists and/or the government coordinated the riot as a “false flag” operation.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a California Republican, reportedly told GOP representatives to stop spreading misinformation that the attack was perpetrated by left-wing activists. He explained to them that he’d reviewed classified briefings that determined the attackers were right-wing extremists, Trump supporters and QAnon adherents.

Now this last point is interesting. This is a testament to exactly how spineless Kevin McCarthy is. You well recall how on January 6 itself McCarthy said that Trump was wrong. Here we find he told GOP reps to stop spreading misinformation. Clearly, he backed down on both of these stances with very little pushback at all.

This is noteworthy. What it indicates is that, as we have known all along, McCarthy knows what’s right and what’s wrong. That’s not his issue. His issue is that he doesn’t have the guts to stand up for what’s right. That is not leadership, that is cowardice. I hope the GOP finds a better candidate for House leadership. McCarthy is a wash.

As to Giuliani, who knows what’s gotten into him? He had good reason to cooperate with the J6 Committee. Now all he’s done is make nutso comments about how the committee is “illegal” and doesn’t have subpoena power, and that’s insane. They are issuing subpoenas daily.

Maybe he figures his cause is hopeless and he’ll just go down in flames. It would seem to me that cooperation with the Committee is the better part of valor and he might be able to negotiate something, assuming he finds himself facing criminal charges. Only he knows exactly where he was and what he did and how it stacks up legally.

We can sit here and guess. Let’s wait for his deposition or indictment, whichever comes first.

  1. With Rudy, I don’t know what’s going through his alleged mind. But he’s probably getting input from people who don’t want him telling the committee about *their* part in 1/6.

  2. Rudy will never go to jail. One day, his brain will just explode internally and he will placed in a cell for vegetables with it ‘s own toilet and a drain in the center of the room. I love the phrase from P J Evans above speaking of Rudy’s alleged mind.

  3. Do these right-wingers not understand that by trying to blame ANTIFA and Black Lives Matter as the “real” instigators of the insurrection that they just make themselves look all the worse? I mean, they’re basically acknowledging “Yeah, we’re so f***ing stupid that we’ll follow ANYONE into criminal actions, no matter who they really are.”
It really makes me question whether they’re just incredibly stupid or if they’re incredibly insane and need to be institutionalized so they don’t do themselves any real physical harm. You know, the kind of thinking that goes “Well, I saw the Road Runner run right into a black hole that the Coyote painted on a rock so I can do the same thing.”
