This is big news, and it’s not very good news for Donald Trump, his kids, and his two bit company. The Washington Post is reporting that Manhattan DA Cyrus Vance has just empaneled a special grand jury to present evidence on trump and his organization. The grand jury will meet three days a week for six months.
This is important news for a couple of reasons. The first is that he’s doing it at all. After all, if Vance wanted a grand jury to issue a subpoena, or a search warrant, he could simply call in any already sitting grand jury, make his request, and present the necessary evidence for it to be issued.
Second, it likely means that Vance is ready to drop the hammer. And he wants the undivided attention of a fresh, specially assigned panel to hear the evidence. Also, Vance is under a time constraint. He has already announced he’s not running for reelection, and for a case like this, he would want to make the charging decisions himself before stepping down. Also, it is unlikely that Vance would call a 6 month panel now if he wasn’t confident that he would be requesting true bills of indictment at the end of the day.
Just a couple of quick tips. First, keep an ear cocked for breaking news. A lot of times, just the fact that a special grand jury is up and running is enough to add gravitas to the entire investigation, and urgency for some subjects, witnesses, and their lawyers to bet ahead of this thing before it gets out of their control.
Second, keep this name a little closer to the front of your memory. Eric Trump. One of the things that launched the Manhattan DA’s investigation in the first place was Michael Cohen’s congressional testimony about Trump fraudulently manipulating the values of his properties to obtain more favorable tax breaks and insurance rates. There has been open reporting that while Trump was President, it was Eric Trump who was the liaison between the Trump organization, tax agencies, banks, and insurance companies for those regulatory duties.
Personally, I would be surprised if this doesn’t start to move with some speed once it gets rolling. As long as it was just an investigation, there was no reason for anybody involved to stick their heads up and offer their necks. But you don’t empanel a special grand jury unless you expect to obtain indictments at the end of the process. You all know the old saying, The first one to flip gets the best deal. Get ready for a 100 yard dash of third rate bums and rats. Don’t touch that dial.
