Donald Trump is reportedly chilling out at Mar-a-Lago, not too worried, because he feels that this acquittal is in the bag, even more solidly than the first one. He’s totally removed from it all, waiting for his Republican enablers to bail him out — again. But here’s the catch: as compelling as the Ukraine testimony was, it can’t hold a candle to this. Not even a match.

We've just watched the campaign commercial for EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN DISTRICT in the 2022 mid-terms. That video, with the Republican official voting "No" on impeachment. That's it. That's the commercial. #impeachment

That is the size of it. Any Republican who can vote to acquit Trump on these facts needs to go through the rest of their political careers — hopefully brief ones — with this footage and their “no” vote hung around their necks, like a bell.
It goes without saying that this has brought back haunting memories.
The footage being aired in the opening of the impeachment hearing is traumatic.
No hyperbole, it is deeply traumatic.
And for many Americans, it is the first they are seeing of it.

I worked on the Hill, my great grandfather was a cabinet maker in the Capitol, my uncle was a Capitol Police officer, and my father worked for the Architect of the Capitol. My grandmother was born two blocks from the Capitol. I cried watching that video.

This video is brutal.

I’m extremely angry over this, and I want justice. This was sedition, and I want jail time.

I wish I could've seen Ted Cruz's face as he watched the MAGA Mob rifle through his desk. Too bad they edited out the part where they say they know he's on their side.

And it's also clear that as this was happening, those of us who were watching the events of January 6th on television only saw a tiny fraction of what was going on. It was so, so, so much worse and so much more dangerous than the horrors we saw in real time.

and to them it's not even footage, they were there

Watching the images of the January 6th insurrection again hurt my soul and profoundly saddened me for our nation. So-called 'patriots' used the flag they pretend to revere to attack federal officers and deface the Capitol while chanting their battle cry, "treason, treason."
— Evan McMullin ?? (@EvanMcMullin) February 9, 2021
It is a shock to the conscience. Maybe it will shock the @SenateGOP to stand up for our country rather than for Trump. He is NOT our country and they did not take an Oath of Office to serve him, but rather to serve our country from foreign AND domestic threats.
— HH (@truthjusticehph) February 9, 2021
Smashing the chamber doors with a “drain the swamp” banner and the “no Trump, no peace” chants really kind of erase any ambiguity
— Wesley (@WesleyLowery) February 9, 2021
These same types of violent white mobs descended on Black neighborhoods all across the country nearly a century ago. And repeatedly even through the #CivilRights era. With that same fury. They were not stopped. They were not prosecuted. They were celebrated. How far have we come?

'And we are listening to Trump, your boss,' a rioter tells a Capitol police officer, who are denounced as 'traitor pigs.'

We are so lucky, as a nation, to have Raskin doing this. https://t.co/6iijiZf3tr

As stated above, if/when the GOP senators vote “no” they should go through the rest of their political careers with their no-vote linked to this footage. This should be the GOP’s epitaph.
And as for Donald Trump, he needs to learn that life is not a TV show.

I think Castor is going to be out of favour – he referred to the Trompador mostly as ‘the former president’
And somebody needs to explain to him that Athens didn’t have a ‘senate’ – they had the Pnyx which was an assembly of ALL citizens – not a selective body
I forgot to mention that in a comment on another article where I pointed out his b.s. about the founders making the Bill of Rights amendments in order of importance. The short version is it’s not true. Various issues were raised by some states that led them to push for a Bill of Rights because the language of the main body of the Constitution in their view required some specific language. So that list was used, starting at the beginning of the Constitution to draft the proposed set of amendments for the Bill of Rights. Which was a longer list than wound up being ratified btw! Those amendments were never meant to be taken as a list in order of importance. Their number is simply where the issue came up in a front to back reading of the Constitution.
Things that should be (but aren’t) covered in US history and civics classes.
I couldn’t watch that. Anyone who votes to acquit is the scum of the Earth and an anti-patriotic enemy of America who should have their American Flag pin confiscated. I don’t know if this comment will appear because sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t and it always takes a long time so I have to go away for an hour or two to wait and see. That combined with the slowness of the site loading now (and the fact that it now does that annoying DailyKos thing of cycling through all your comments when you go backward instead of returning you to the main page like it used to) make using this site really frustrating and difficult.
It took hours & hours for this comment to finally appear.
I have none of those hassles with this excellent site.
All Americans (except those who participated and would only puff out their puny chests with pride) need to see this footage. All of it. Perhaps it would strip them of their rose-colored glasses, once and for all. And perhaps not. But good god, something has to be done.
