Trump is pushing his luck on everything these days. It appears we were working on a new trade policy between the two countries, which fell through because Trump, or whoever was speaking for him, made a ridiculous set of demands that blew all the work to smithereens. Now there are all sorts of stupid tariffs incoming early next month. Trump still has this idea stuck in his head (like Greenland) and refuses to back off. It’s no surprise that Canada said no. Gratitude to Raw Story for the information:
Trade talks between Washington and Ottawa fell through Friday, leading both nations to vow to impose tariffs on each other. President Donald Trump imposed a 50% tariff on a number of Canadian goods, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to match those tariffs “dollar for dollar.” Carney claimed that Trump demanded, “Canada change its French language.” Carney also claimed that the Trump administration “introduced language in the final hours of negotiations that would have restricted Canada’s ability to make trade deals with other countries,” the Associated Press reported Sunday. Accepting such terms, Carney said, would have reduced Canada to “the economic equivalent of the 51st state.”
Who are we going to believe, Carney or Trump? The answer is obvious.
It’s ridiculous. Canada does not want to be our 51st state. They’ve told us before and at length. Trump refuses to remember that. He thinks they would make a fine state for the US. YeaNo. Canada is Canada and does not belong to Trump or the US. He is trying to make the Art of the Deal into the Art of the Steal. Canada was fine with us before Trump lost his mind at the beginning of his second term. We had all sorts of things easily flowing between Mexico, Canada, and the US. It was a triumvirate of trade. No longer.
It started with Trump and his tariffs. Remember, they were going to bring all this money into America, and everyone would be doing well? Instead, they were a disaster. Actually, they are a disaster. Anyone with a pocketbook can tell you that. Prices aren’t coming down. Paychecks aren’t going up. And now a number of products are going to cost even, even more because of Trump.
This is tiring. On, off, on, off- when will it stop? Unless SCOTUS can do something, which is highly unlikely, we’re stuck until at least when Trump is out of office in one way or another. He cannot run for a third term. His body and/or mind aren’t going to hold out much longer. Or he might surprise us, but hopefully not. In the meantime, he needs to leave Canada alone.
Author and military researcher Chris Owen argued there was no scenario in which Canada would even entertain such demands. “The US wanted Canada to automatically mirror US tariffs and break its own existing trade deals with its partners – in effect running Ottawa’s trade policy from Washington,” Owen wrote Sunday in a social media post on X. “No country could have accepted that.”
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that, of all the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest-working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except for one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and help ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thank you. Ursula

Now that the actual list of US demands to Canada have been made public, it’s clear that they amounted to the Canadian government surrendering its sovereignty to the United States. That’s the constant negotiation strategy of Trump and his minions: when it looks like a settlement is close, add a passel of outrageous new demands. What could go wrong? Well, Prime Minister Carney just showed Trump what could go wrong. And now American consumers and Canadian producers will both pay for Trump’s addled notion of dealmaking…
This makes me wonder if chump may be doing this same thing when there’s negotiations with other countries, like Ukraine, Iran? I’m pretty sure he’s the one making totally one-sided demands.
