Another Orwellian exercise in Double Speak and Double Think, folks. You’re going to love this one. The middle class is getting scrunched out of the housing market. 40% of renters say they have a problem keeping up. In many parts of the country it takes a six-figure income to qualify for home ownership. Enter Donald Trump, stage right, with his *answer* to these woes.
Trump: I don’t want to drive housing prices down. I want to drive housing prices up for people who own their homes. You can be sure that will happen pic.twitter.com/9BupkUmXss

I listened to that three times to make sure it was as incomprehensible as the first two times. And note that Trump gets his jab in there about “people who didn’t work very hard.” This from a man who never worked a day in his life as you and I understand that term, and still doesn’t work. If we don’t have a house, or something that we need (like food) it’s because we haven’t been working hard enough. It has nothing to do with the rich getting richer and the fact that we live in a K-shaped economy and job layoffs are happening right and left.

I agree with the tweeter who said, “Some golden era.” Enjoy your tortilla. Hope it isn’t too many days old.

He wants prices to go up because his family and his oligarch supporters own multiple properties and benefit. The younger you’s and me’s are condemned to be life-long renters or holders of multi-generational mortgages. And — you nailed it, Ursula — the seniors who do own their homes are often faced with staggering health care costs and are forced to liquidate their home equity in order to survive. Who scoops up their nest-eggs? The hedge funds, of course. The American dream of home ownership has become a nightmare under this demented crook.
I’m thinking it’s less a “Golden Age” (something which the US has never really had in the conventional sense) and more a new “Gilded Age” (something which the US did have–in the late 19th and very early 20th centuries, highlighted by few numbers of wealthy and powerful men ruling over the country with no regard for the less wealthy majority who were told they just weren’t working hard enough otherwise they’d also be wealthy).
And given Drumpf’s aesthetic, “gilded” does seem very appropriate.
