It is sobering indeed to see the way that democracy’s guardrails have been challenged. Both the judiciary and the Constitution have seen assaults in the era of Trump never before seen. When Watergate came down to its inevitable denouement, the Republican party of that day was in no mood to brook a crooked president and Nixon himself was not of a mettle to do what Trump would have done, which was insist on staying in the office. Nixon had a respect for the institution of government and the presidency. It was a combination of those factors which led to his resignation, for the good of the country. Now we have someone in office who is only out for his own good, the country be damned.

The truly appalling abuse of the Constitution, however, has been with respect to Trump’s two impeachments. The Senate simply would not vote to remove him. That undermines the Constitution more than anything else. The Founding Fathers believed that men (and it was only men in those days) of good will and decency would occupy the House and Senate. It was believed that they would vote their conscience, not cower in fear of MAGA reprisal. Little did the likes of Franklin and Jefferson know the level of cowardice that would one day define government in this country or they might have written the Constitution differently.

In its most simplest form. I’m sure the Founding Fathers had no clue that it would be an accepted thing to lie blatantly publicly, day in and day out. The people who conceived our government were themselves men of honor and likely incapable of imagining a media ecosystem where it would be acceptable to propagandize non stop 24/7.

Likely the Founding Fathers made the assumption that education would always be a respected value and one that people would seek out. They probably believed that the electorate would seek to be informed. They didn’t conceive of either the apathy in the day and age in which we live, nor the mendacity.

But most of all, as has been pointed out, it is the mendacity and lack of character in both chambers of Congress that is to blame for Trump still being here. He should have been removed from office during Impeachment I. If not then, then certainly by Impeachment II. And now, unless I miss my guess, Trump will keep on being Trump and most likely there will be an Impeachment III.

Although in this case, I’m not sure we want to remove Trump and get J.D. Vance in his place and stead. The reason for that is that Vance won’t nominate individuals for their telegenic qualities, Vance will find ruthless people to carry out the edicts of Project 2025.

As bad as Trump is, I think a Vance presidency might be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

  1. The founding fathers could never have conceived of a Congress in which one political party had as its basic policy the breaking of the oath each member swore to uphold the Constitution.
