This is only the day after the triple H-bombs got dropped in the off-year election on the east coast, but things are moving fast. I mean faster than the Plymouth Satellite in Planet Claire level of speed. Kevin Roberts is now doing the hangdog apology tour for having defended Tucker Carlson’s indefensible position to have Nazi Nick Fuentes on his show. Just a few short days ago it was “we need to hear all the voices.” Now, suddenly, Nazi voices are in a different category — as well they should be.
Unbelievable.
They always “didn’t know” — even while platforming him,
defending him,
and calling his fanbase a “coalition.”Nick Fuentes has been a neo-Nazi cartoon villain in broad daylight for years.
You don’t “accidentally” end up praising him.
You go looking for him.Now…

Have you noticed the pattern in this administration that nobody knows who anybody is? Or so they claim? Trump claims he doesn’t know the identity of people that he’s giving clemency to. He just hears a name, or hears voices saying a name, maybe and POOF! A pardon appears and free from prison they walk. That’s what Roberts sounds like. Um….maybe going forward you learn the facts before you open your mouth and take a position in the first place?
But that’s not really what’s going on and you know that as well as I do. What’s really at issue here is that since last night’s display by the electorate, our Howard Beale moment, where voters went to the polls and said, “We’re mad as Hell and we’re not going to take it anymore,” a lot of GOPers are forced to wake up and smell the coffee.
The reelection of Trump was intoxicating. And intoxicated they all became. The obvious fact that Trump had narrowly squeaked past Harris with a measly 1.5% of the vote was the elephant in the room that nobody wanted to look at. They believed Trump’s braying about a “mandate” and “landslide” and they all acted accordingly. Let’s burn it to the ground, they all said, we’re in charge now, we do what we want, democracy be damned. Project 2025 and DOGE and the Heritage Foundation and the whole lot of them. Fascism is so much fun, especially when you’re one of the ones in charge right? Politics is all about power, right?
Hell, let’s even bulldoze the White House, why don’t we? After destroying the Rose Garden and putting gawdy gilt gee gaws in the Oval Office?
None of these ideas were good ones. In fact, they were all profoundly bad ones. And so now last night’s election is acting like a bucket of ice water and people like Kevin Roberts have been jolted awake.
Roberts probably has been getting some calls from donors. And he will get many more.
The Trump 2.0 honeymoon is over. And Trump can lie all he wants about the booming economy but he needs to be careful about that, because right-wing pundits are lying about the stock market crashing after the election of the commie in New York City last night. So it can’t be both crashing and booming the same day, stories have to be gotten straight.
Trump will continue to lie because he hasn’t got anything else. He will just look stupider as the days go by. And go by they will for twelve months and in November, 2026, then Trump may find himself checkmated by a Democratic House and/or a Democratic House and Senate.
But just the House will be fine. His lies and machinations will be stonewalled at their source. And as to the Senate, even if we don’t win it back but if we get a few crucial seats, the margin could be razor thin. Trump will have no power there either.
He’ll be finished. And that will be fine with him. He wants to play golf anyhow.
It’s the Kevin Roberts of the world and the sitting lawmakers looking to hang onto their seats who need to worry. Trump is a transitory figure at age 79 and in his second term. But they are not, or at least they don’t want to be.

the big problem for all of them is that they are what they are. as you and others keep pointing out trump is only a symptom. changing would mean moving to the left and that ain’t gonna happen. so they will do what they always do which is change their message but not their substance. and even in that they will be screwed by trump who will not change his message
Great piece, Ursula!
