Folks, this is amazing. And ridiculous. And worrying. Trump is getting drunk on power and the idea of more power. He’s gone from everyday “oh geez, he’s at it again” to “holy SH*T what the hell is he doing NOW?”. It’s terrifying, and that word is not used lightly. He has picked a place to flex his “power” muscles that seems so completely random it makes one wonder if your city could be next. From CNN:
“At the request of Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, I am directing Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to provide all necessary Troops to protect War ravaged Portland, and any of our ICE Facilities under siege from attack by Antifa, and other domestic terrorists. I am also authorizing Full Force, if necessary,” Trump wrote. President Donald Trump said in a social media post Saturday he will send troops to Portland, Oregon, a city he described as “war ravaged,” to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities he claimed are “under siege” by Antifa and “other domestic terrorists.”
Portland is war-ravaged? Since when? This city has not been on the radar At All. There might have been a blurb or two about them, but that’s all. All of us at Pz keep up with the news. If there had been something, one of us would have written about it. There are no signs that we did, and it was checked. So what is meant by that?
State and local leaders, including US Sen. Jeff Merkley, Portland Mayor Keith Wilson, US Rep. Maxine Dexter, and city council members, urged the community to stay peaceful at a news conference on Friday night, according to CNN affiliate KPTV, after the city saw an increase in activity by federal agents. “Here is what I do know – the president has sent agents here to create chaos and riots here in Portland, to induce a reaction. To induce protests. To induce conflicts. His goal is to make Portland look as he was describing it as,” Merkley said. “Our job is to say, ‘We are not going to take the bait.’”
WHAM. Portland knows what he is doing and why. They are going to stand tall and not respond in kind. Now, there may be a group or two that tangles with the troops because someone is bound to be short-tempered. That’s a given. But overall? He’s not going to give them the excuse he wants. Trump can try all he wishes. Portland is on to him.
An ICE facility about 2 miles south of downtown Portland has been at the center of almost constant protests throughout the summer. Most of the demonstrations have been peaceful, but some have ended in the deployment of tear gas and resulted in the facility being closed for several days over the summer. Earlier this month, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that Portland wasn’t necessarily on his radar as a city where federal intervention was necessary. But he claimed without evidence that “paid terrorists” are wreaking havoc on the city, which he said his administration would “wipe out.”
Trump just loves to flap his lips. He spouts disturbing things that have no basis in reality. He’s trying to find a way to declare martial law. We know this. It didn’t work in LA. Troops looked “bored out of their minds in DC” (from a previously read article). Sure, a few people clashed with them in LA, as I mentioned above. But overall, the protests stayed peaceful. The same will happen, or not happen, perhaps, in Portland. In your face, Trump. We know what you are trying to do.
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that of all of the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love.
