I have to assume there is a whole lot of work needed to do this, because my first reaction on reading about this was “what took her so long?” Well, I’m not a lawyer, so I have no idea what it’s like going into one of these. But she has filed, and I am so, so pleased she has. Her firing was a blatant disregard for her qualifications. From CNN:
Maurene Comey, a federal prosecutor involved in the Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and Sean Combs cases, has sued the Trump administration over her firing this summer, levying another legal challenge to the Justice Department’s treatment of career officials. Comey, the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, alleges in a lawsuit filed Monday in federal court in Manhattan that she was not given any explanation for her termination and says it was done in retaliation for being her father’s daughter.
There we have it, laid out in black and white. Terminated with no reason except apparently, she is a Comey, and this administration does NOT like her father. Dad is Not Happy with Trump and his cabinet and his bullshizzle. He’s been quite up front about it. Maureen has never posted anything. She’s done her work, and done it well. So why, out of the blue, was she let go?
“Ms. Comey’s termination – without cause, without advance notice, and without any opportunity to contest it – was unlawful and unconstitutional,” according to the lawsuit. “In truth, there is no legitimate explanation. Rather, Defendants fired Ms. Comey solely or substantially because her father is former FBI Director James B. Comey, or because of her perceived political affiliation and beliefs, or both,” the lawsuit alleges.
WHAM. There it is. Nothing except firing her. She wasn’t given anything, so she could not question anyone and ask why. When you go through the reasons and analyze them, and you’re left with the improbable, that’s your answer. It really does mean discrimination because of her father, even though her actions were not remotely similar.
Comey is one of several federal civil servants fired by the Trump administration who have filed lawsuits. Comey was notified by email just before 5 p.m. on July 16 that she had been removed from her position “pursuant to Article II of the United States Constitution,” according to the lawsuit. She said no reason was given for her termination following nearly a decade of positive performance reviews and promotions. Comey was fired the day after she was asked to take the lead on a “major public corruption case,” according to her lawsuit.
I’m so proud of her fighting back against this shady administration. They’ve done far too many things that skirt the edge of the law (or break the law). Her lawsuit story is out there. If nothing else, the Comey name will get this to spread far and wide. She’ll have a lot of unspoken support. And that’s something. I wish her much luck.
