Well, now, this is a lovely bit of news about someone I love to detest. Seems she’s seen the writing on the wall and the anger from her constituents. She’s had to do some hard thinking and made a decision that surprised me. I really wasn’t expecting this. There is much glee in my house. From CNN:
Iowa Republican Sen. Joni Ernst has decided not to seek reelection to a third term, two people familiar with the decision say, and is poised to make an announcement next week. Ernst, 55, has been wrestling with the decision for months, but began telling friends in recent days.
Smart woman. She’s the reason the Big Ugly Bill passed. She thought the House would cut it back. But they didn’t, and the bloated thing is now signed, sealed, and delivered. Good one, lady. You didn’t do your JOB, and now America is suffering under this big bill that only feeds the rich and takes away from everyone else. Her vote was what passed it in the Senate and sent it back to the House. I don’t care how much she denies it. We all knew her one vote was what made the difference.
CBS first reported Ernst’s decision. Ernst has come under fire since responding, “We are all going to die,” to a constituent at a town meeting who raised concerns about Medicaid cuts in Trump’s policy megabill. As the Republican Party has evolved under President Donald Trump, Ernst has often struggled to strike a balance between GOP voters identifying with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” movement and those who don’t.
She waffles around and pisses *everyone* off. It’s not just MAGA or unMAGA. Everyone across the US knows about her, and it’s not in a good way. I’m glad she has decided to resign her seat. I hope she just fades into obscurity. Then maybe she’ll start feeling what the rest of us already are feeling. She’ll have inflation and higher prices. I doubt Medicaid cuts will affect her, which is a pity.
Trump won there [Iowa] by 8 percentage points in 2020 and 13 points in 2024. However, Iowa Democrats point to the party’s stronger performance compared to 2024 results in special elections this year — including a victory in a conservative state Senate district this week — as evidence that the tide could turn in 2026. Democrats, needing a net gain of four seats to win control of the Senate in next November’s midterm elections, are seeking to expand the field of potentially competitive GOP-held seats.
We have another chance to flip a seat. We only need 4. It appears that the Democratic Party is re-energized. I hope we are. No matter what, we need to try. Things are looking up, and we don’t need to waste it. See ya later!
Friends, I know everybody begs you for money. I promise you that of all of the outlets bugging you for spare change, we are the smallest and the hardest working. We’re a bunch of old, disabled people, except one writer in his mid-50s. But the rest of us are in our sixties and seventies, and this is a labor of love. All we’re asking for is the ability to continue our quest to tell the truth about Trump and ensure democracy survives. If you can help, please do. Thanks. Ursula

“I hope she just fades into obscurity.”
You can guarantee that even her obscurity will be well paid.
These magats never get what they really deserve, not obscurity but penury.
Yup. And that’s part of what pisses me off. When they retire, they’re still going to be comfortably off. They’ll *never* know and understand what the American people are going through. That’s irony with a big dash of anger from me. These people get rewarded even if they’re crap and do a crap job. Whatever happened to “for the people”?
Not good news IMO. It means she knows she will lose – and so does the party – who will replace her with someone who has a far better chance of winning. In fact, maybe the party forced her to resign now because it gives them better leverage this way.
Yeah, she’s out. But Iowa hasn’t changed.
