In one of the most enlightening accidental quotes one is ever going to hear from the current president of the United States, Donald Trump gave a lot of the game away when it comes to his world views and approach to both ruling (As opposed to governing) and perhaps his personal life. The mumbled statement came amidst meetings today with Europe’s most powerful leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as Trump tries to bring everyone together for some kind of peace deal, whole or in part, going forward. Trump let his colleagues know that he believes Vladimir Putin wants to enter into an agreement – but not for Ukraine’s sake, nor even Russia’s. Donald Trump believes that Putin wants an agreement for Trump personally, even if it sounds insane:

Yes, we do understand. Even in a war between two continental powers, Trump still believes that it fundamentally comes down to just personal relationships, namely, him and everyone else. As all readers readily understand, this is not generally how republics – or even modern nations- see the world. His view is more akin to the Dark Ages and dynastic royal family rule, where the state truly was just an extension of the king, and citizens mere serfs.
Were that the only problem.
The fact that Trump believes the whole world revolves around him is nearly a given. Even MAGAs would likely concede as much. The damage comes in when a president truly believes that this is personal to Vladimir Putin, as if Putin feels some sense of loyalty to Donald Trump. This is preposterous. Putin may be “selfless” in comparison to Trump, but it only comes because Putin seeks to enlarge Russia’s power to something approaching the glory days of the Soviet Union, not necessarily personal aggrandization. Yet such a view is so totally foreign to Trump that he thinks this is really just about favors between people who like each other.
We have seen this before. During his first term, Trump left his first meeting in China with President Xi Jinping talking only about “how nice they were to me.” As if foreign policy should revolve around compliments, amenities, and great Peking duck. But it does, in Trump’s mind.
One small phrase opens up a big window into Trump’s entire world – him.

Zoomers, we are always in need of donations. We work hard to get you analysis that you will not find in the mainstream media, but all media have been hit hard since the big companies have gobbled up and monopolized commentary. Anything you can spare will be immensely appreciated. And thank you to all who have donated generously already. Ursula
